1-month-old baby died after her mother put her in heated oven instead of her crib and then called a relative saying “something wrong with the baby;” mother charged

Missouri – In a disturbing case that has shaken Missouri residents, a 26-year-old mother, identified as M. Thomas, faces grave legal consequences after the death of her 1-month-old daughter under horrific circumstances. Thomas has been charged with involuntary manslaughter following an incident where she placed her baby in an oven, mistaking it for the child’s crib. This appalling event led to the infant’s death due to severe thermal injuries.

The police department received a distressing call around 1:30 p.m. on February 9, concerning a “non-breathing infant.” Upon arrival, officers were met with a dire scene: a baby girl with significant burn injuries was being held by a person at the scene. According to the officers, a male relative informed them that earlier in the day, he had left the home, with only Thomas and the baby inside. At that time, both Thomas and her daughter were reportedly in good spirits.

The situation took a tragic turn when Thomas called the relative around 1 p.m., urging him to return home immediately due to an issue with the baby, saying that there was “something wrong with the baby.” The relative described rushing back only to be “greeted” by the smell of smoke upon entering the house. He discovered the infant deceased in her crib, and when he confronted Thomas about what had occurred, she shockingly responded, “I thought I put [the girl] in her crib and I accidentally put her in the oven.”

Investigators found the baby in a car seat in the living room, not in the oven as initially feared, yet the infant had sustained extensive thermal injuries. Details emerged that her onesie appeared to have melted onto her diaper, and a burned baby blanket was also recovered at the scene. Thomas, overwhelmed by the situation, declined to provide further explanations to detectives.

Following these tragic events, Thomas was arrested and has remained in the county’s jail, held on a $100,000 bond. Her initial charge of endangering the welfare of a child was later escalated to involuntary manslaughter by a grand jury, reflecting the severity of the incident. Thomas is scheduled to face trial on January 13, with the legal proceedings set to unravel the details of that fateful day. The community has been left in shock, grappling with the horrifying nature of the incident. Neighbors expressed their dismay, with one noting the rapid arrival of emergency services and another lamenting the tragic loss of a child in their neighborhood.

Prosecutor J. Baker has also voiced her sentiments, stating, “We acknowledge the gruesome nature of this tragedy and our hearts are weighted by the loss of this precious life. We trust the criminal justice system to respond appropriately to these awful circumstances.” This case not only highlights a grievous incident but also casts a spotlight on the broader issues of child safety and parental responsibility. As the community and the justice system deal with the aftermath, many are calling for measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
