15-year-old boy, who went to his ex-girlfriend’s home only to shoot her 9- and 13-year-old siblings and mother to death before fleeing on foot, will be tried as an adult

Texas – In a shocking act of violence in Texas that drew nationwide attention, a teenager, identified as D. Valdez, accused of killing three members of his ex-girlfriend’s family, will now face trial as an adult. Valdez, who was 15 years old at the time of the attack, has been formally certified to stand trial in adult court on a charge of capital murder of multiple persons, one of the most serious charges under Texas law.

Authorities say the attack left 39-year-old Jessica R., her 9-year-old son Jacob, and her 13-year-old daughter Kiley dead inside their apartment in December 2025. Investigators believe the killings stemmed from a breakup between Valdez and Jessica’s 15-year-old daughter. The ruling to try Valdez as an adult marks a major development in the case and means the teenager now faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted.

The violence unfolded on Dec. 9, 2025, at the victims’ homeAccording to the police department, officers were dispatched to the apartment complex around 5:45 p.m. after receiving reports of gunfire. When officers arrived at the residence, they discovered three victims inside the apartment who had been fatally shot. Jessica and her two children were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators later revealed that the suspect had previously been in a relationship with Jessica’s 15-year-old daughter.

Police say the teenage suspect had originally planned to confront or shoot his ex-girlfriend outside her school. However, investigators believe he changed his plan and instead traveled to the apartment where her family lived. Once inside the residence, authorities say Valdez shot Jessica first, then turned the gun on the two younger children before fleeing the scene. The ex-girlfriend, who was believed to be the intended target, was not physically harmed in the attack.

After the shooting, police began searching the surrounding area for the suspect. Approximately 40 minutes later, officers spotted Valdez walking along the highway and took him into custody. Authorities said they recovered a handgun believed to have been used in the killings, though officials have not publicly stated how the teenager obtained the weapon. Following his arrest, Valdez was taken to the county youth center, where he remained while prosecutors sought to transfer the case from juvenile court to adult court.

During a certification hearing held recently, a judge determined that the severity of the crime warranted prosecution in adult court. Such hearings allow judges to evaluate whether juvenile suspects accused of serious crimes should face trial as adults. The court considers factors such as the nature of the crime, the suspect’s background, and the potential risk to the publicAfter reviewing the case, the judge ruled that Valdez should be tried as an adult. With that decision, the case will now move forward through the adult criminal justice systemUnder Texas law, defendants who were under the age of 18 at the time of a capital murder offense cannot receive the death penalty, but they can still face life in prison if convictedProsecutors have indicated that the next step will involve presenting the case to a grand jury, which will determine whether to formally indict Valdez on the capital murder charge.

In the days following the shooting, Police Chief M. Gerke described the killings as a deliberate act of violence that deeply affected the community. It was such a tragic and cowardly act of violence,” Gerke said during a news briefing. “It’s the kind of thing that really marks a community. Particularly in the holiday season, it’s a hurtful, horrible thing.” The loss of Jessica and her two children left family members, neighbors, and community members mourning the lives taken in what investigators believe was a targeted act driven by anger following a teenage breakup. As the case now moves into adult court, the legal process will determine whether Valdez will ultimately be held criminally responsible for the triple homicide that continues to send shockwaves through the community.
