18-year-old boy, who helped his girlfriend fatally stab her father she wanted dead for years because he was abusing her and her mother, was sentenced

Nebraska – In a somber conclusion to a tragic case in Nebraska, an 18-year-old teenager, identified as I. Honigschmidt, has been sentenced to substantial prison time for his involvement in the murder of a 70-year-old man, identified as Jesse G., the father of his girlfriend, Sallie G. The sentencing occurred last Friday, marking a pivotal end to a case that has gripped the community.

The series of events that led to the murder unfolded on October 3, 2022, starting ominously when Honigschmidt drove Sallie from school to her apartment. It was there that Sallie fatally stabbed her father. The couple then returned to school, setting their phones into airplane mode and subsequently turning them off, a ploy designed to create a digital alibi by making it appear as though they had never left the school premises.

Later that day, in a chilling act of deceit, Sallie dialed 911 to report discovering her father deceased at home. Responding officers found Jesse on the living room couch, with six stab wounds and a laceration on his head. The forensic analysis revealed that one of the stabs had pierced through his rib cage, severing an artery and causing rapid internal bleeding that led to his death within minutes. Adding to the victim’s vulnerability, he was described in court documents as “wheelchair bound” due to a prior amputation and a recent hip fracture, both of which significantly limited his mobility. During the police investigation, inconsistencies in the couple’s accounts, along with digital and physical evidence, quickly turned the focus onto Sallie and Honigschmidt as prime suspects. Both were ultimately tried as adults, despite being juveniles at the time of the murder, due to the gravity of the crime.

Sallie’s trial revealed a backdrop of domestic turmoil. She confessed to harboring a longstanding desire for her father’s death, driven by what she perceived as his constant abuse towards her mother and herself, her parents’ frequent fighting, and his habit of making financial decisions that burdened the family. Her motivations also included a desperate need to maintain her relationship with Honigschmidt, whom her father reportedly disliked intensely.

The court handed down a sentence of 15 to 20 years to Honigschmidt for aiding and abetting the murder and an additional five to 10 years for tampering with evidence, with the terms to run consecutively. He received credit for over two years already served in jail. In a separate trial last month, Sallie was sentenced to 40 to 60 years in prison after pleading guilty to a second-degree murder charge.

Prosecutor C. Sammons emphasized the lingering impact of the tragedy on the community and first responders, some of whom remain in therapy due to the distressing nature of the crime. “The defendant is obviously going to prison for the rest of her life because she did the unthinkable in this case, judge. She had a duty to protect her children from anyone or anything who would try to harm them. But unfortunately, in this case, she was that thing,” Sammons stated, reflecting on the profound betrayal inherent in the actions of both young perpetrators.
