2-year-old boy died after his parents left him locked in overheated car while they were in a hospital with their 3-year-old son, who later died from the abuse suffered; parents sentenced

Arkansas – In a deeply disturbing case in Arkansas that caught nationwide attention, a young couple will likely spend the rest of their lives in prison after pleading guilty in connection with the deaths of their 2-year-old son, who suffered fatal heat exhaustion, their 3-year-old son, who died from severe abuse and malnutrition, and the abuse of another of their children, a 4-year-old, as Judge K. Whatley sentenced the parents, identified as Justin R. and Deja R., to 70 years in a state prison for two counts of second-degree murder and one count of first-degree domestic battery. The 2-year-old boy died after being left unattended in an overheated vehicle while the parents were in the hospital with the 3-year-old boy for treatment of the injuries he suffered at their hands. The 3-year-old boy later succumbed to the injuries.

Shortly after the incident, authorities arrested the parents under grim circumstances involving multiple allegations of child neglect and abuse. Authorities initially charged each parent with capital murder following the death of their toddler, who was found in an overheated car in a hospital parking lot, and another capital murder charge was added later after the death of the 3-year-old boy. The incident came to light on Sunday, July 7, when officers responded to concerns at a hospital about a 3-year-old patient showing signs of abuse and neglect requiring urgent medical intervention. Authorities collaborated following the discovery that the parents had four other children whose whereabouts were initially unknown to officers.

Later that day, a distressing discovery was made when hospital security, informed by law enforcement, located four children inside a vehicle in the hospital’s parking lot. The external temperature that day soared to 92 degrees, creating a dangerous environment inside the car. All children were found to be suffering from heat exhaustion and were immediately taken to the hospital for emergency care. Despite rapid medical attention, the youngest of the siblings, the 2-year-old boy, could not overcome his injuries and was pronounced dead the following day. This prompted a homicide investigation by the police, who also executed search warrants and found additional signs of neglect at the couple’s residence, including a malnourished dog that was taken into custody by animal services.

The deaths and the circumstances leading to the arrests have shaken the community and triggered a comprehensive investigation by local authorities. The investigation revealed a horrifying pattern of abuse and neglect. Prosecutors say the 3-year-old had been severely malnourished for an extended period of time and suffered physical injuries consistent with long-term mistreatment. The 4-year-old sibling also showed signs of abuse and was included in the charges brought against the parents.

Originally, Justin and Deja were facing capital murder charges for the deaths of their two sons. However, they struck a deal with prosecutors, pleading guilty to reduced charges to avoid the death penalty. As part of the agreement, each was sentenced to 30 years for each murder count and 10 years for the abuse of their surviving 4-year-old child. The judge ordered the sentences to run consecutively, resulting in 70 years of imprisonment for each defendant.

The couple’s remaining children are now under the care of the state, with the community and local agencies rallying to prevent such incidents in the future and to support the affected family members during this challenging time. The local community and authorities have expressed their grief and condemnation of the circumstances leading to the children’s death.
