2-year-old twin girls hospitalized in critical condition after ingesting methadone their 56-year-old grandma had kept within their reach in her purse while she was “caring” for them; arrest

Minnesota – In a deeply disturbing incident out of Minnesota that caught nationwide attention, a 56-year-old grandmother, identified as T. Flex, is facing felony charges after her 2-year-old twin granddaughters overdosed on methadone while in her care—one child now clings to life while the other was barely saved in time. The woman was arrested earlier this week and charged with two counts of felony child endangerment after police discovered the toddlers had ingested methadone from her purse.

The incident unfolded last Sunday at Flex’s home, where the twins had been dropped off by their father. What should have been a typical day with their grandmother turned into a nightmare. At some point during the visit, one of the toddlers became unconscious and was found struggling to breathe. Emergency responders rushed to the residence and transported the child to a nearby hospital, where she was admitted to the intensive care unit in critical condition.

Just two hours later, the situation escalated. Authorities were called back to the home after the second twin also began showing signs of distress. She, too, was experiencing severe breathing difficulties and displayed “pinpoint pupils”—a clear indication of opioid exposure. Paramedics administered Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, and the child’s condition quickly stabilized.

Hospital tests confirmed that both girls had ingested methadone, a powerful drug used to treat opioid dependency. Experts say even small doses can be extremely dangerous, or fatal, when consumed by children. As police investigated the circumstances, they found methadone in Flex’s purse, which had been left where the girls could reach it. Investigators believe the twins accessed the medication without her knowledge.

Flex was arrested on Tuesday and booked into the county jail. Though she has since been released, she is now facing two serious charges that reflect the risk her negligence posed to the children’s lives. One of the girls is expected to recover, thanks to the quick action of paramedics. The other, however, remains in critical condition, and her prognosis is uncertain.

Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing, but the facts already uncovered point to a devastating lapse in judgment. A caregiver who should have provided protection instead allowed deadly medication to be left within reach of toddlers. What followed was an entirely preventable tragedy that left a family shattered and a community reeling.

Flex is now awaiting further court proceedings. Her case serves as a painful reminder of the importance of securing medications—particularly in households with young children. The cost of such oversight in this case was almost immeasurable: one child nearly lost, another fighting for her life, and a grandmother now facing the weight of criminal charges for a moment of recklessness that could have cost both their lives.
