4-year-old boy “appeared dizzy” and made a “low grunting sound” before dying as a result of the beatings of his mother who disciplined him everytime he used the toilet improperly; mother sentenced

Georgia – In a deeply disturbing case in Georgia that caught nationwide attention, a 43-year-old mother, identified as S. Williams, has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after a jury found her guilty of brutally beating her 4-year-old son to death for failing to use the toilet properly. Williams was convicted in August on charges including malice murder, two counts of felony murder, four counts of first-degree child cruelty, and three counts of aggravated battery in connection with the death of her young son.

On Tuesday, December 9, Judge A. Jackson imposed a sentence of life without parole, plus 10 additional years. The courtroom heard harrowing testimony of how a defenseless child was punished repeatedly for not being potty trained, ultimately paying with his life.

The fatal incident unfolded on March 6, 2022, when police responded to a 911 call reporting an unresponsive child at an apartment. Upon arrival, officers found the 4-year-old boy lying on the living room floor, without a pulse. Emergency medical services attempted resuscitation and noted both fresh and healing bruises covering his body. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. In her statements to police, Williams said that her son was not toilet trained and admitted to disciplining him by hitting him with her hand, a house slipper, a purse strap, and a phone charging cord whenever he urinated or defecated outside the toilet. She initially told investigators that her son had accidentally hit his head a week prior and denied causing his injuries.

But the account given by a 13-year-old child who lived in the home contradicted that version of events. The witness told officers that on March 5, the day before the 4-year-old died, Williams had “whooped” the boy again for not using the bathroom correctly. After the beating, the child said the boy “appeared dizzy” and collapsed to the floor, unresponsive. Instead of calling for help, Williams placed her son on her bed and threw water on him in an attempt to revive him. He regained consciousness briefly but soon became unresponsive again. Throughout the night, his only movements were described as reflexive—his arms jerking, his legs kicking.

Rather than seeking emergency care, Williams searched her phone for terms like “remedy for concussion” and “coma—symptoms and causes.” At 5 a.m., she awoke to find her son making a “low grunting sound” and completely limp. She told authorities she felt him stop breathing. She first called the boy’s father, and then, nearly an hour later, called 911 at 6:26 a.m. Williams admitted she had hesitated to call for help because of the visible bruises on her son’s body. According to the medical examiner, the young boy died from blunt force trauma to the head, and his life could likely have been saved had medical attention been sought when his symptoms first appeared.

During sentencing, prosecutors condemned the cruelty of Williams’ actions, noting the brutality of the assault. Judge Jackson echoed that sentiment, describing the young boy’s death as one of the most gruesome crimes she had encountered on the bench. What began as a case of discipline for a developmental delay ended in relentless violence and death. In punishing her child for not mastering a basic life skill, Williams took away the one thing he would never get back—his life. The court’s sentence ensures she will never again walk free.
