4-year-old boy died while his parents were getting ready for a night out after he picked up a gun they kept in their vehicle and shot himself; parents may face charges

Florida – In a heartbreaking incident in Florida, a 32-year-old couple may be facing charges as their 4-year-old boy, identified as Chosen M., tragically lost his life after accidentally shooting himself with an unsecured firearm he found in his family’s car. Chosen was discovered by his parents, identified as Quinta and Robert M., in their vehicle with a gunshot wound to his head on Friday evening around 6:30 PM.

The devastating sequence of events began around 6:30 p.m. when Chosen’s parents, heard a startling ‘pop’ sound while at home. Initially thinking one of their children had broken something, they were horrified to discover the actual source of the noise. According to reports, the young boy had entered the family car parked in the garage while his parents were getting ready for a night out and found an unsecured handgun beneath the driver’s seat. Unaware of the danger, Chosen tragically shot himself in the head. Upon discovering their son in such a dire state, his parents rushed him to a hospital. Due to the severity of his injuries, Chosen was later transferred to a children’s hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds the following afternoon, as per reports.

This incident has raised significant questions about firearm safety and parental responsibility. Police Chief S. Parker commented on the tragedy, expressing deep sympathy for the family and highlighting the incident as a heart-wrenching accident. He remarked, “As a father and grandfather, I can’t imagine what the parents are going through right now,” emphasizing that the community’s thoughts were with the family during this difficult time.

The case also touches on legal issues surrounding the safe storage of firearms. Florida Statutes Section 790.174 mandates that a loaded firearm in a home must be stored securely if a child under the age of 16 could gain access to it. This law aims to prevent such tragedies by requiring that firearms be kept in a locked box or secured with a trigger lock. Violations of this statute are treated as misdemeanors, but as of now, the police have not specified whether the parents will face any charges.

The community and the police are now dealing with the aftermath of this preventable tragedy, which underscores the critical importance of gun safety and the potential consequences of negligence. As the investigation continues, the authorities have noted that the family is cooperating with the ongoing investigation. As the legal processes unfold and the community reflects on this tragic event, the importance of responsible gun ownership and the necessity of adhering to safety regulations are painfully clear. The loss of young Chosen serves as a stark reminder of what is at stake when firearms are not securely stored. This incident not only represents a personal catastrophe for the family but also serves as a solemn lesson on the broader implications of firearm safety within the community.
