New Jersey – In a disturbing case in New Jersey, a 31-year-old father, identified as C. Gregor, faced severe legal consequences for his role in the death of his 6-year-old son, Corey. Gregor was sentenced to 25 years in prison following a conviction of endangering the welfare of a child and aggravated manslaughter. This sentencing came after a harrowing incident where Gregor forced his young son to undergo a treadmill workout that ultimately led to the child’s death days later.
The incident, which took place on March 20, 2021, involved Gregor compelling his son Corey to run on a treadmill at dangerously high speeds as a form of punishment. Surveillance video from the fitness center captured the distressing ordeal, showing the young boy repeatedly falling off the treadmill and being forced back on by his father. On one occasion, the footage even captured Gregor biting his son’s head. According to prosecutors, the intense exercise regime came as a result of Gregor believing his 6-year-old son was too fat.
Less than two weeks after this punishing exercise, on April 2, Corey’s condition deteriorated rapidly. He woke from a nap showing severe signs of distress, including nausea and disorientation, which prompted Gregor to rush him to the hospital. The situation escalated quickly, as Corey suffered a seizure during a CT scan and was pronounced dead shortly before 5 p.m. that same day. An autopsy revealed that Corey had sustained blunt force trauma to his chest and abdomen with lacerations to his liver and heart. Testimony from W. Doyle, a registered nurse who was on duty at the time the boy was brought to the hospital, highlighted the severity of the boy’s condition upon arrival, noting that he was non-verbal and his health rapidly declined.
During his trial, Gregor claimed he had never intended to harm his son, suggesting that the child’s death was a tragic oversight and that he regretted not seeking medical attention sooner. Despite these claims, the evidence presented, including the harrowing video and medical expert testimony, led to his conviction. The sentencing phase was emotionally charged, with Corey’s mother, B. Micciolo, advocating for the maximum possible punishment. She expressed her profound grief and anger towards Gregor, accusing him of acting out of spite and treating their son as a scapegoat for his frustrations.
Judge G. Ryan ultimately sentenced Gregor to 20 years for aggravated manslaughter and an additional five years for child endangerment, emphasizing the particularly heinous nature of the crime. The community and the family of Corey were left reeling from the tragedy. Micciolo’s impact statement painted a picture of a mother’s worst nightmare and highlighted the irreversible impact of Gregor’s actions on their family.
