Summer energy bill aid available for low-income families in Arkansas

Pine Bluff, Arkansas – Arkansas families needing assistance with summer energy bills can now apply for federal aid through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Applications open July 8, and the program will distribute approximately $13 million in funding on a first-come, first-served basis, according to the Arkansas Department of Energy and Environment.

To qualify for LIHEAP, families must meet specific income and household requirements for their county. Interested applicants can check their eligibility here.

How to Apply

To complete an application, you will need:

  • A valid photo ID
  • Gas and electric bills
  • Pay stubs

Arkansas LIHEAP provides two types of benefit payments. The regular payment is a one-time assistance based on household income and the number of residents in the home. The crisis payment is also a one-time payment designed for those facing disconnection, a past-due balance, or if a bill is prepaid for less than seven days.

The Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas reported that last year, 44,278 Arkansans received assistance during the summer program, and 46,121 were helped during the winter program.

For more information on how to apply, visit the Arkansas Department of Energy and Environment’s website.
