Road closure planned in Fayetteville for new Highway 62/I-49 interchange

Overnight ramp closures scheduled in Pulaski County as crews test new wrong way detection systems

Fayetville, Arkansas – The construction of the new Highway 62 (Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard)/Interstate 49 (I-49) interchange in Fayetteville will necessitate the permanent closure of a portion of South Futrall Drive, starting at 9 a.m. on Monday, August 5. This closure marks a significant step in the development of improved transportation infrastructure in the area.

Details of the Closure

South Futrall Drive will be permanently closed just south of West Best Way Street and the entrance to the Best Western Windsor Suites. The closure extends to the point where South Futrall Drive turns east and becomes 18th Street. Barricades will be placed at the west end of 18th Street near the 18th Street Train shop and on South Futrall Drive just south of the entrance to Best Western Windsor Suites.

The closure is part of a larger plan to enhance connectivity in south Fayetteville. It will facilitate the connection of West 15th Street to South Futrall Drive and the construction of an overpass over I-49. This overpass will link South Futrall Drive to South Shiloh Drive, providing crucial east/west connectivity for the area. This project represents the first phase of the new Highway 62/I-49 interchange construction.

Impact and Future Plans

The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) has taken steps to ensure that the construction process is as smooth as possible, with clear signage and barricades to guide drivers. The closure of South Futrall Drive is expected to streamline the construction process and minimize disruption to local traffic.

“The connection of West 15th Street to South Futrall Drive and South Shiloh Drive will provide east/west connectivity for south Fayetteville and is the first phase of construction for the new Highway 62/I-49 interchange,” according to the announcement.
