ARDOT reminds political candidates to keep campaign signs off highway right of ways

Bridge construction forces temporary closure of Highway 118 between Gooden Road and Felts Street

Little Rock, Arkansas – The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) is reminding political candidates and their supporters that placing campaign signs on highway right of ways is unlawful in Arkansas.

“There are several Arkansas statutes addressing encroachment and the placing of signs or other objects on highway right of way,” stated ARDOT Director Lorie Tudor.

Under state law, only official directional, informational, and regulatory signs are permitted on state-owned highway property. ARDOT’s maintenance offices will remove any unauthorized signs, including campaign “yard” signs. Owners of larger “billboard” signs will be contacted for removal.

Those wishing to retrieve their removed signs can do so during normal business hours at the nearest ARDOT Area Maintenance Office.

“The Arkansas Department of Transportation encourages everyone to follow the right of way laws to keep the roadsides clear and ensure our highways are as safe as possible,” Director Tudor emphasized.

By keeping the right of way clear, ARDOT aims to maintain safe highways for all Arkansans.
