2-month-old girl hospitalized with injuries to the brain after her father “handled her too roughly” when she cried uncontrollably and would not calm down; father charged

Illinois – In a shocking incident in Illinois, a 2-month-old girl is recovering from multiple serious injuries, including three brain bleeds and a fractured upper arm, after her 24-year-old father, identified as G. King, abused her while she was in his care. The child’s father, King, has been charged with felony aggravated battery and is being held in custody after a judge granted the state’s request for detention until his trial.

The disturbing case came to light on June 3 when a caseworker from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) arrived at the police department to report suspected child abuse. Earlier that day, the caseworker had visited the hospital where the injured baby was being treated and had spoken with the child’s mother. According to authorities, the mother informed the caseworker that she had been with her baby on May 31 and June 1, and at that time, the infant appeared to be healthy and free of injuries. However, everything changed when she left her daughter in King’s care on June 2 while she went to work.

That same afternoon, King called the mother, saying the baby was crying uncontrollably and would not calm down. When the mother returned home later that evening, she found the infant screaming in a way she had never heard before. Concerned, she undressed the baby and noticed visible bruises while changing her diaper. Alarmed by her child’s condition, she rushed her to the hospital. Doctors discovered devastating injuries: three distinct brain bleeds, a fractured upper arm near the shoulder, and multiple marks on various parts of the baby’s body. The severity and nature of the injuries immediately raised red flags, and doctors concluded the wounds were not consistent with any sort of accident. The treating physician noted that the injuries showed a pattern, strongly suggesting non-accidental trauma and child abuse.

Authorities swiftly launched an investigation, and King was brought in for questioning. During a police interview, he admitted that while watching his daughter, he became “overstimulated and overwhelmed.” He claimed the baby might have fallen, and he remembered grabbing her arm. He also stated she may have hit something and confessed that he may have “handled her too roughly,” though he claimed he could not recall all of what happened. On Friday, June 7, King was officially arrested and charged with aggravated battery to a child, a serious felony offense. On Tuesday, Associate Judge M. Gilles granted the state’s petition to detain, meaning King will remain in custody without bond until his court proceedings move forward.

The investigation is being handled by the police department, which has asked for the public’s assistance. Anyone with further information about the incident is encouraged to come forward. While the infant’s current condition has not been fully detailed, hospital staff continues to monitor her recovery from the traumatic injuries. Authorities have not announced any additional charges, but they emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that more developments could follow as evidence continues to emerge.

The case has sent shockwaves through the local community, with many left heartbroken by the apparent violence inflicted upon such a young and helpless child. Prosecutors and child welfare officials have vowed to seek justice for the infant. This incident highlights the devastating consequences that can arise from unaddressed stress and the importance of safe, supportive resources for new parents.
