Mother left in critical condition after her 20-year-old son she was trying to calm down as he was shouting uncontrollably in the middle of the night shot her repeatedly; son charged

New Mexico – In a harrowing case out of New Mexico, a 20-year-old man, identified as K. Marin, has been arrested for allegedly shooting his mother at least eleven times during the early hours of the morning. The woman, who was reportedly attempting to calm her son as he shouted uncontrollably in their home, was left in critical condition.

Marin now faces charges of aggravated battery against a household member with a deadly weapon and attempt to commit second-degree murder. He is being held without bond. In addition, court records show Marin is already under indictment for a separate 2023 case, which includes attempted capital murder, aggravated assault, and drug-related charges. The violence unfolded late Sunday night and into early Monday morning. Marin’s brother told investigators he heard his sibling yelling around 11 p.m. and tried to intervene, urging him to go to sleep. Their mother also stepped in, telling Marin he was “acting crazy,” according to court filings.

To settle him down, the mother reportedly escorted Marin to his bedroom and stayed with him. But hours later, around 3 a.m., gunshots erupted from that room. Marin’s brother awoke to the noise and found their mother wounded and bleeding in the hallway. Without hesitation, he placed her in a vehicle and rushed her to the hospital. During the drive, he called another family member to report the shooting. Hospital staff notified police, and officers were dispatched to the home, where they discovered a chaotic scene. A protective sweep revealed bloodstains, shell casings, and damage from bullets on the outside of the house. Investigators found three spent casings from a semi-automatic rifle in Marin’s bedroom, along with a bloody footprint and blood beneath a vehicle parked in the driveway.

A woman staying in the house at the time of the shooting said she was asleep when she heard the victim yelling for Marin’s brother. When she checked the hallway, she saw the mother bleeding heavily, clutching her abdomen. After the mother was taken to the hospital, the woman re-entered the home and saw Marin calmly sitting on the living room couch. This is not Marin’s first brush with serious charges. In January 2023, he was indicted on multiple counts, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one of which resulted in a brain injury or paralysis. He also faces a charge of attempting to commit capital murder of multiple people.

Doctors have confirmed the mother sustained eleven gunshot wounds, and she remains in critical condition. Marin is currently awaiting further legal proceedings. As investigators work to determine what triggered the shooting, the community is grappling with the aftermath of a violent outburst that nearly claimed the life of a woman who was only trying to help her son through a moment of distress.
