Man, who strangled his girlfriend to death and then abducted her 1-year-old daughter only to dump her body in a retention pond where she was found dead days later, was found guilty

Illinois – In a disturbing case that shocked communities in Illinois and neighboring Indiana, a 21-year-old man, identified as A. Fowler, has been found guilty of murdering his 21-year-old girlfriend, identified as J. Murphy, and abducting her 1-year-old daughter, whose body was later discovered in a retention pond days after the crime. Fowler was convicted by a jury on three counts of murder and one count of aggravated kidnapping for the deaths of Murphy and her young daughter. Prosecutors said Fowler strangled Murphy inside her apartment before taking the toddler away from the home and leaving her in conditions that ultimately led to her death.

The verdict came after investigators presented evidence detailing the violent events that unfolded during the early hours of November 2021. Fowler now faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison. He is scheduled to return to court for sentencing on April 20. According to investigators, Fowler and Murphy had been involved in what police described as a troubled relationship. Authorities also confirmed that Fowler was not the father of Murphy’s daughter.

The case began to unfold on Nov. 9, 2021, when Murphy’s family members became concerned after they were unable to reach her. She had failed to show up for work that day, something that worried those close to her. After repeated attempts to contact her without success, relatives reported her missing. Police and fire officials responded by conducting a welfare check at Murphy’s apartment. When authorities arrived, they were able to enter the apartment through an unlocked balcony door. Inside, they immediately noticed something unusual. Investigators reported a strong smell of bleach throughout the residence. As officers continued to search the apartment, they made a devastating discovery. “An ensuing check for well-being revealed Ms. Murphy had apparently been murdered and her daughter to be missing,” police later stated in a news release. Murphy’s body was found inside the apartment, while her 1-year-old daughter was nowhere to be found.

As investigators began piecing together what had happened, surveillance cameras in the area helped reveal crucial details about the timeline. Video footage showed Fowler leaving Murphy’s apartment at approximately 2:40 a.m. on the day her body was later discovered. Authorities believe this was shortly after Murphy was killed. About an hour later, surveillance cameras captured Fowler’s vehicle parked near a retention pond in Indiana, roughly 50 miles southeast of the apartment. This location would soon become central to the investigation. Police believe Fowler traveled to the pond with the missing toddler after leaving the apartment. Following that stop, investigators said Fowler briefly went to his parents’ home before leaving the area entirely. He eventually drove to Missouri, where authorities later located and arrested him on the same day Murphy was reported missing. Meanwhile, search efforts were underway for the missing child. Days later, the search came to a tragic end when the girl’s body was discovered floating in the retention pond where Fowler’s vehicle had been seen earlier.

Medical examiners later conducted autopsies on both victims. The county medical examiner determined that Murphy died from asphyxiation due to strangulation, and her death was officially ruled a homicide. The baby’s death presented a more complex medical picture. A forensic pathologist concluded that the toddler died from “cardiopulmonary arrest” that was “possible due to hypothermia.” Investigators believe the child may have been exposed to cold temperatures for an extended period of time. According to the medical report, “prolonged exposure” to temperatures in the low 40s could have caused hypothermia and ultimately led to “eventually sudden death.” The autopsy did not show evidence that the child drowned, and doctors did not find significant internal injuries. As a result, the toddler’s official manner of death was classified as undetermined, though investigators tied it directly to Fowler’s actions.

After hearing testimony and reviewing evidence, jurors ultimately concluded that Fowler was responsible for both deaths. The jury found him guilty on three counts of murder and one count of aggravated kidnapping, holding him accountable for strangling Murphy and abducting her daughter. The verdict means Fowler will likely spend decades behind bars, and possibly the rest of his life in prison. He is currently scheduled to appear in court again on April 20, when a judge will determine his final sentence. For Murphy’s loved ones, the conviction marks an important step toward justice after a case that began with a missing person report and ended with the tragic loss of both a young mother and her child.
