Arkansas celebrates designation of U.S. Highway 67 as part of Interstate 57

Arkansas officials to host ribbon-cutting for Interstate 30 Crossing project in downtown Little Rock

Beebe, Arkansas – On November 7, the public is invited to a significant milestone in Arkansas’s transportation history as officials gather to commemorate the designation of U.S. Highway 67 as part of Interstate 57. The event will begin at 1 p.m. in the Centennial Bank Gymnasium on the Arkansas State University – Beebe campus, with attendees including elected officials, Arkansas Highway Commission members, Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) leaders, and other community stakeholders.

The official designation marks a substantial advancement in Arkansas’s infrastructure, as this segment of the highway will now connect Arkansas more efficiently to broader national routes, improving economic opportunities and mobility for the region.

Strengthening Economic and Regional Connections

Interstate 57, currently a 400-mile route, runs from Chicago, Illinois, to Sikeston, Missouri, and serves as a critical north-south artery in the region. With the new designation, 110 miles of U.S. Highway 67 between North Little Rock and Walnut Ridge will now be part of the Interstate system. This conversion is a major step in the completion of the Future Interstate 57 Corridor, a 240-mile link from North Little Rock to Sikeston, Missouri. The project has been in the works since the entirety of the route was labeled a “High Priority Corridor,” a classification that facilitated federal funding and approval to elevate the highway to Interstate standards.

This new stretch of I-57 is anticipated to bring significant economic benefits to Arkansas, improving access to national east-west routes such as Interstates 70, 80, and 90, and linking with established corridors like Interstates 30 and 40 in central Arkansas. Arkansas Highway Commission Chairman Alec Farmer highlighted this potential, stating, “Designating the sections of U.S. Highway 67 that already meet Interstate standards as Interstate 57 highlights this route and the cities and counties along this route for economic growth and job creation.”

By establishing this segment as part of the Interstate network, Arkansas aims to attract new business investments, strengthen regional economies, and enhance job prospects for communities along the corridor.

Reducing Congestion and Improving Mobility

The completion of I-57 is set to improve regional mobility significantly by offering an alternate route for truck traffic that typically congests Interstate 40 between West Memphis and Little Rock and Interstate 55 between West Memphis and Sikeston. ARDOT Director Lorie Tudor emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “The designation of Interstate 57 is the culmination of years of collaboration, planning, and perseverance. This designation is great news for commerce in Arkansas as it increases mobility between the south-central United States and the Midwest.”

The new I-57 designation is also expected to provide safer and more efficient transportation options for local commuters and interstate travelers, alleviating traffic on some of Arkansas’s busiest highways and ensuring a more direct route for moving goods and people between the Midwest and the southern United States.

A Vision Years in the Making

The journey toward making U.S. Highway 67 a part of Interstate 57 has involved extensive planning, funding, and collaboration at all levels of government. With portions of the route now officially recognized as an Interstate, this accomplishment marks a significant achievement for ARDOT and its partners. As construction continues on additional sections of the corridor, ARDOT remains committed to enhancing Arkansas’s infrastructure, ensuring that all remaining segments meet Interstate standards and completing the link to the Missouri state line.

ARDOT officials credit this project’s success to the continued support from government officials and community partners dedicated to fostering progress in Arkansas. The event on November 7 will be an opportunity for the public and officials alike to celebrate the long-awaited realization of this vision, reflecting the potential for continued economic and infrastructural growth in Arkansas.
