Arkansas – Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin paid tribute to the most outstanding law enforcement officials in the state during the annual 2024 Officer of the Year Awards luncheon in a celebratory event earlier this week. Celebrated in the capital, the event honored those who had shown extraordinary bravery, commitment, and service to their hometowns during the past year.
Emphasizing the value of appreciating the diligence and sacrifice of law enforcement workers, Attorney General Griffin spoke to the assembled officials and their families.
“Each year we honor the service, sacrifice, and dedication of Arkansas’s law enforcement with the Officer of the Year Awards. The men and women we’ve recognized today have shown outstanding courage and commitment to their communities in the past year. As we celebrate the ways they have gone above and beyond to keep Arkansans safe, we honor not just these few, but all law enforcement officers,“ Attorney General Griffin said.
The luncheon’s high point was the announcement of Chief Deputy John Cutrell of the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office as the State Officer of the Year for 2024. Particularly noteworthy were Chief Deputy Cutrell’s bravery during an important event at the Fordyce, June 21, 2024 Mad Butcher grocery store. Cutrell was fast to react after a mass shooting, supporting law enforcement and emergency medical operations.
Griffin went into great detail about how Chief Deputy Cutrell, upon arriving near the site, acted right away to assist law enforcement personnel and overburdened paramedics.
“The victim Chief Deputy Cutrell assisted that day is alive because of the chief deputy’s actions. In a situation of chaos and violence, Chief Deputy Cutrell demonstrated strength, compassion, and courage. He was among many heroes in Fordyce that day, and his actions are representative of the best of law enforcement in our state,” Attorney General Griffin added.
Cutrell went back to the location to help to preserve the crime scene after his emergency response, therefore ensuring that important evidence was maintained. His fast thinking and determination were recognized with not only saving lives but also with preserving the integrity of the law enforcement process after the aftermath of the violence.

The event also honored two Dwayne Yarbrough Distinguished Service Award recipients and regional winners from across the state. In honor of their final sacrifice and bravery, the gathering also honored four officers who had passed while on line of duty.
Attorney General Griffin concluded his remarks by reaffirming his commitment to supporting the law enforcement community, ensuring they have the necessary resources to continue their work with the highest levels of excellence and professionalism.
Apart from honoring the courageous deeds of Arkansas’s law enforcement personnel, the 2024 Officer of the Year Awards confirmed the state’s commitment to appreciating the essential contribution these men and women contribute in preserving public safety.
