Arkansas officials caution against improper sign placement during ongoing political campaigns

Little Rock, Arkansas – With election season underway, the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) is reminding political candidates and their supporters to obey state laws regarding the placement of campaign signs. According to ARDOT, it is unlawful to place campaign signs on highway right of way in Arkansas—a practice that can pose risks to both motorists and road maintenance crews.

State regulations allow only official directional, informational, and regulatory signs to be posted on state-owned highway property. Any other signs—including campaign signs—are considered unauthorized and subject to removal.

“It is important to keep highway right of ways clear for the safety of both drivers and road workers,” said ARDOT Director Jared Wiley, stressing the department’s priority on roadway safety and compliance with state law.

Local ARDOT Area Maintenance Offices are responsible for clearing any non-permitted signage. Personnel will actively remove yard signs placed on highway right of ways, and if large billboard signs are found in violation, ARDOT will contact their owners directly and request removal. Those who wish to retrieve removed signs may do so during normal business hours by visiting the nearest ARDOT Area Maintenance Office.

ARDOT encourages all candidates and campaign volunteers to double-check the placement of signs and ensure they are located off the state right of way to avoid removal and support safe travel conditions for all Arkansans.
