Drunk mother left her child crying inside an overturned vehicle, then lied to cops she didn’t call for help because she didn’t have access to a phone; arrested

Florida – In a distressing incident in Florida, a 21-year-old mother, identified as J. Lopez, 21, faces serious legal consequences after a DUI crash that resulted in her child being left trapped in an overturned vehicle. Lopez, who was driving under the influence and on a suspended license, has been charged with child abuse, aggravated abuse, neglect of a child, and driving under the influence. The incident, which occurred just after 4 a.m. on July 25, has sparked considerable concern regarding the safety of children in vehicles where the driver is impaired.

According to an arrest affidavit from the police, Lopez reportedly lost control of her vehicle while attempting a U-turn, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and flip onto its side. A witness who came upon the scene reported hearing the child crying inside the car, and Lopez pleaded with them not to call 911 and help her remove her baby from the vehicle. Despite having her phone, Lopez did not contact emergency services; a witness made the 911 call. When authorities arrived, they found Lopez sitting by her car, and despite her claims of sobriety, officers noted signs of alcohol influence, including the smell of alcohol and her glassy, bloodshot eyes.

The child, described only as a “baby” in the police documents, was still inside the flipped vehicle when first responders arrived. Authorities noted that Lopez made no attempts to rescue her child from the wrecked car. The baby was eventually extracted by first responders and taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation. Following the crash, Lopez refused medical treatment and made contradictory statements to police, at one point denying she had access to a phone, despite having been observed using one to make calls during the incident. She also expressed a desire to leave the state and suggested that her child be placed in foster care.

Lopez is currently being held in jail with a bond set at $7,000 and awaits her arraignment scheduled for August 19. Meanwhile, her child has been placed under the custody of the Department of Children and Families. This measure reflects the severity of the incident and the immediate need to ensure the child’s safety.

This case underscores a growing concern in the state regarding impaired driving. According to the Department of Health, the state has seen an increase in alcohol-confirmed motor vehicle traffic crash fatalities, highlighting a critical area for public safety intervention. As the legal process unfolds, the focus will remain on the wellbeing of the child and the accountability of those responsible for his endangerment. This case serves as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of driving under the influence, especially when it endangers the lives of the most vulnerable.
