Elderly Pine Bluff man found dead after fire engulfs home on South Nebraska Street on Friday

Pine Bluff, Arkansas – Tragedy struck early Friday morning as Pine Bluff Fire & Emergency Services responded to a devastating house fire that resulted in the death of an elderly man. The emergency call came in at 4:38 a.m. on January 30, 2026, reporting a residential structure fire at 1501 S. Nebraska Street.

Firefighters arrived on scene within minutes, at 4:44 a.m., and found the home fully engulfed in flames, with heavy smoke and fire visible from the roof. While assessing the situation, a resident at the scene alerted responders that one person was still inside the burning structure.

Fire crews immediately launched a fire suppression and search and rescue operation. As they battled the flames, firefighters entered the residence and located the victim, a 78-year-old male, in a rear bedroom. Sadly, he had already succumbed to injuries related to the fire.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office was quickly notified and arrived shortly after firefighters confirmed the fatality. Officials have not yet released the identity of the deceased.

At this time, the origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation, and authorities have not ruled out any potential causes. Fire investigators will continue to examine the scene in the coming days.

This incident highlights the ongoing risks of residential fires, particularly during overnight hours when occupants are often asleep. Pine Bluff Fire & Emergency Services have not issued further statements but urge residents to maintain functioning smoke detectors and practice fire safety year-round.
