Father who abused his 6-month-old son since he was 3 weeks old forcefully shoved a bottle into the baby’s mouth and broke both his arms and legs, resulting in the child’s hospitalization; arrested

Indiana – In a harrowing case of child abuse in Indiana, a 28-year-old father, identified as T. Gerhardt, has been charged with severe allegations of child abuse resulting in critical injuries to his 6-month-old son. The charges laid against him include one count of felony domestic battery resulting in serious bodily injury to a person under 14 and one count of felony neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury. This disturbing incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting a grievous case of child abuse.

The case came to light when, on May 1, 2024, authorities were alerted to the situation by hospital staff, where the infant was admitted with multiple injuries. According to the probable cause affidavit, the baby had sustained fractures in both arms and legs, specifically with breaks in the upper and lower areas of the left arm, the upper area of the right arm, and both the upper and lower areas of the right and left legs. In addition to the fractures, the baby exhibited bleeding in the mouth, caused by tearing of tissue—likely a result of forcefully shoving bottles or pacifiers into the baby’s mouth. According to doctors, the injury to the baby’s mouth had been an issue since the victim was about 3 weeks old.

Medical professionals diagnosed many of the fractures as classic metaphyseal lesions (CMLs), indicative of severe physical abuse through forceful yanking or pulling. This type of injury is not consistent with normal handling of an infant and points directly to abusive actions. Gerhardt was arrested at his home on July 29, 2024, following investigations led by the police department. The arrest was executed without incident after law enforcement had received tips regarding Gerhardt’s location. Upon his arrest, Gerhardt faced serious charges related to the abusive treatment of his child, reflecting the severity of the allegations against him.

During his initial hearing on July 31, Magistrate Judge G. Garrison found probable cause for the charges, and Gerhardt’s bond was set at $150,000. He remains detained at the county’s detention center, with an omnibus hearing scheduled for October 7, 2024. The mother of the infant, who works during the day while Gerhardt cared for the child, and other family members expressed their distress over Gerhardt’s temperament and handling of the infant. Family members described Gerhardt as “very mean, short-tempered, and yelling a lot at the victim” when the mother was not present. This environment contributed to a pattern of neglect and abuse that ultimately led to the injuries sustained by the baby.

According to the affidavit, Gerhardt attempted to justify the injuries by blaming them on tight swaddling and “rough diaper changes,” claims that medical experts strongly refuted, asserting that such actions could only be described as abusive. The investigation into this case continues as authorities delve deeper into the circumstances leading up to the incident. The severity of the charges reflects the gravity of the actions, with the legal system now tasked with ensuring justice for the young victim.
