Father, who deliberately deprived his 7-year-old daughter of food for a year, and did not take her to a doctor for three years, resulting in child’s death, was sentenced

Minnesota – In a disturbing case in Minnesota, a father has been sentenced to five years in prison for the starvation and neglect of his seven-year-old daughter, resulting in her tragic death. J. Fineday, 42, faced the severe consequences of his actions in a court ruling that spotlighted the harsh realities of child neglect.

Fineday was charged with felony child neglect leading to death, after prosecutors revealed he had grossly neglected his daughter, Jewel, in essential aspects of care. This neglect lasted from the start of the year until her death on Christmas Day, 2022. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, despite having adequate resources, Fineday failed to provide Jewel with necessary food and healthcare, leading to her becoming alarmingly undernourished.

The circumstances of Jewel’s death were particularly stark. She succumbed to malnutrition and a fatal Group A Streptococcal infection, which were direct results of the neglect she suffered under her father’s care. Disturbingly, her condition at the time of her death was described as “skeletal,” a testament to the severe deprivation she endured. Further details revealed by the prosecutors painted a grim picture: Jewel had head lice and was kept from attending school, where she could have received meals. Additionally, her father had not taken her to see a doctor for three years, except when financial incentives were provided for COVID vaccinations.

The judicial proceedings culminated with Fineday pleading guilty to the charges, a move that led Judge P. Schlitz to opt for a slightly reduced sentence due to Fineday’s admission of guilt and expressed remorse. Despite the possibility of a harsher penalty, Judge Schlitz noted the importance of acknowledging Fineday’s acceptance of responsibility for his criminal conduct. The case also involved S. Rosebear, Jewel’s grandmother, who was convicted by a jury for her role in the neglect. She is currently awaiting sentencing. This case has prompted a broader discussion on the responsibilities of caregivers and the critical importance of seeking help when overwhelmed.

Jewel’s life, though tragically short, was remembered fondly in her obituary. She enjoyed simple pleasures like watching TikTok videos and playing hide-and-seek. According to her obituary, “Jewel was a very quiet girl and when Grandpa would sing and beat his drum, she would dance hard and out dance all the other kids.” This case has not only brought to light the severe consequences of neglect but also the urgent need for community awareness and intervention in situations of child abuse. The federal jurisdiction of the case, due to its occurrence on a Native American reservation, underscores the complex layers of legal and social work necessary to prevent such tragedies in the future.
