Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders declares state of emergency as Arkansas braces for severe winter storm

State agencies receive guidance from Governor Sanders on federal funding interruptions

Arkansas – Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has officially declared a state of emergency in Arkansas ahead of an anticipated severe winter storm set to impact the state on February 18, 2025. The executive order is intended to prepare for the potentially hazardous conditions and ensure swift response efforts to protect citizens, properties, and essential services.

The expected storm is forecasted to bring significant snowfall, ice accumulation, and dangerously low temperatures. These conditions could create widespread travel hazards, power outages, and disruptions to essential supply chains. The emergency declaration is designed to alleviate these conditions and facilitate quick recovery efforts.

Emergency Provisions for Critical Supplies and Services

As outlined in the declaration, the state of emergency primarily applies to commercial vehicles and emergency response units involved in delivering vital goods and services. The order includes specific exemptions and authorizations to allow for efficient transportation of resources necessary for recovery efforts.

  1. Support for Utility Restoration
The executive order recognizes that severe weather may lead to downed power lines and infrastructure damage, requiring immediate restoration efforts. To assist in this process, commercial vehicles hauling heavy equipment, oversized loads, transformers, and other transmission materials will be granted emergency exemptions. This will enable utility crews to restore power as quickly as possible.

  2. Ensuring Delivery of Essential Goods
The declaration acknowledges the potential impact on commercial supply chains. To prevent delays in delivering crucial supplies, commercial carriers transporting groceries, pharmacy items, medical equipment, fuel, livestock, feed, and other necessary commodities will be granted exemptions. This measure aims to prevent shortages and ensure that Arkansas residents continue to have access to essential products.

  3. Authorization for Emergency Response Vehicles
The executive order allows emergency response vehicles, including utility trucks, bucket trucks, and electric utility supply vehicles, to bypass Arkansas Department of Transportation weigh stations until February 24, 2025. This provision is intended to expedite their ability to respond to storm-related damages. However, the order does not waive size and weight restrictions for vehicles that require permits.

Emergency Order in Effect Until February 24

The emergency declaration will remain in effect until February 24, 2025, unless extended or terminated earlier. The state government will continue assessing conditions and making necessary adjustments to ensure a swift response to the storm’s impact.

Governor Sanders urged residents to take the necessary precautions, remain vigilant, and follow guidance from local officials to stay safe during this period of severe weather.
