Louisiana – In a deeply disturbing incident in Louisiana that drew nationwide attention, a 28-year-old mother, identified as K. Bass, is accused of murdering her 1-year-old daughter and then threatening the life of her second daughter, aged 2, moments later. Bass has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder after authorities say she shot and killed her 1-year-old daughter inside the family home on New Year’s Day. Prosecutors said the shooting was intentional and that Bass openly admitted what she had done in front of her surviving child and the children’s father.
The deadly incident unfolded shortly after 8:20 p.m. on January 1 at their residence. According to police and witness statements, Bass was inside the home with her two young daughters and their father when a gunshot rang out. The father told police he heard a loud bang and immediately ran toward the sound. What he found inside the room would haunt him forever. Bass was standing there holding a gun. Their 1-year-old daughter had been shot. Nearby, the couple’s 2-year-old daughter was crying in terror. Through tears, the toddler called out, “Help me, daddy.”
The father rushed to his children, fearing the worst was still to come. He later told reporters that in that moment, he believed he might lose both of his daughters. “I almost lost two babies,” the father said. “I lost one because her mama wanted to send her to God.” According to the father and police reports, Bass made disturbing statements immediately after the shooting. She allegedly showed no panic or confusion about what had happened. Instead, she openly acknowledged the act. “I just sent our baby to God,” Bass allegedly told the victim’s father. Even more alarming, the father said she then turned her attention toward their older child and said, “Now I gotta get her.”
Those words prompted the father to act quickly to protect his surviving daughter and contact authorities. Police officers were dispatched to the home and arrived to secure the scene. The 1-year-old girl was pronounced dead from the gunshot wound. Bass was taken into custody without incident. The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services immediately stepped in and removed the 2-year-old girl from the home to ensure her safety. She is now in protective custody.
In the days leading up to the shooting, Bass had posted a message on social media that has since drawn attention from investigators and the public. On December 17, less than two weeks before the killing, she wrote about struggling with her faith and behavior. “I feel like I’ve been living my life in ways opposing my religion,” she wrote. “And I hope I haven’t been spreading a false idea of what Christianity is.” She went on to ask for prayers, writing: “Pray for me. Pray for the people who have seen my imperfect practices. Pray for my forgiveness and pray for their clarity. Power in the name of Jesus Christ.” Authorities have not said whether the post will play a role in the prosecution, but it has added to concerns about Bass’ mental state leading up to the shooting.
Bass was formally booked into jail on Friday following the incident. She faces a single count of first-degree murder, one of the most serious charges under Louisiana law. Her bond was set at $10 million, reflecting both the severity of the crime and the risk prosecutors believe she poses. As of now, the case remains under investigation. Police are continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses. For the victim’s father, the tragedy is beyond words. He is now grieving the loss of his youngest daughter while trying to protect and care for his surviving child. The community has been left shaken, and a family has been torn apart by a single, violent act—one that ended a young life and forever changed another.
