Benton, Arkansas – Drivers traveling in Saline County should prepare for an overnight disruption as a temporary highway closure is set to impact traffic flow late Friday into early Saturday.
Officials announced that Highway 229 will be closed north of I-30 beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 27, with the roadway expected to reopen by 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 28. The affected stretch runs from the westbound frontage road of the interstate to W. Jackman Trail, creating a full interruption for motorists who normally rely on this route.
Detours and construction work planned overnight
The closure, dependent on weather conditions, is necessary to support ongoing construction tied to the new Buc-ee’s Travel Center. Contractors are scheduled to install drainage crossings at the site, a step that requires full access to the roadway for safety and efficiency.
To help drivers navigate around the closure, a clearly marked detour will be set up. Motorists heading toward the north side of the closure will be directed to take I-30 east to Exit 116 at Sevier Street or South Street, then reconnect to Highway 229. Those trying to reach the south side will follow Highway 229 to I-30 west and exit at Exit 114, which connects back to Highway 67 and Highway 229.
Officials say multiple warning systems will be in place to guide drivers through the changes. Digital message boards, construction barrels, barricades, and posted signage will all be used to alert motorists well in advance of the closure and help reduce confusion.
Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and stay alert while traveling through the area during the overnight hours. With construction continuing, the temporary inconvenience is aimed at supporting long-term improvements tied to the new development.
