West Memphis, Arkansas – Motorists traveling across the Interstate 55 bridge over the Mississippi River should prepare for temporary lane restrictions beginning Monday, August 31.
Daily closures of the northbound and southbound outside lanes are scheduled to continue through Thursday, September 17. The restrictions are necessary so crews can conduct a routine inspection of the bridge.
Work will take place Monday through Thursday each week, weather permitting.
Different closure times planned for each direction
The southbound outside lane of I 55 will be closed from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Meanwhile, the northbound outside lane will close from 7 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on the same days.
Only one direction will experience an outside lane closure at a time. The work is scheduled to begin with the southbound side of I 55 before crews move to the other direction.
Drivers approaching the bridge should watch carefully for changing traffic conditions and allow additional time for their trips while the inspection is underway.
Cones and signs will be placed around the work area to alert motorists and guide traffic through the affected section.
Because the inspection depends on suitable weather, the work schedule and associated lane restrictions could be affected by changing conditions. The planned closures are expected to conclude on September 17 once the routine bridge inspection is completed.
