Jefferson County authorities arrest man after false alarm disrupts detention center operations

Pine Bluff, Arkansas – A Jefferson County man accused of repeatedly spreading false claims has been arrested after a social media broadcast triggered a large emergency response at a local detention facility. Mark Cannon, identified by officials as a serial provocateur and self-proclaimed community activist, now faces criminal charges tied to an incident that caused disruption and concern at the W.C. “Dub” Brassell Adult Detention Center.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the situation unfolded on Thursday, April 2, 2026, when Cannon used platforms such as Facebook Live to make alarming claims. During the broadcast, he falsely stated that a firearm had been brought into Misdemeanor Pod 1 inside the detention center. He repeatedly insisted that a gun was present and also accused detention staff of allowing contraband to be smuggled into the facility. At one point, Cannon displayed what appeared to be a firearm on camera, further intensifying the situation.

Authorities treated the claims with urgency. Deputies and detention staff quickly launched emergency response protocols, including a full search of the housing unit that had been identified. Despite the seriousness of the report, no firearm or related contraband was found during the search, confirming that the claims were false.

Pattern of false claims leads to arrest

Investigators say this was not an isolated event. The sheriff’s office pointed to a pattern of behavior in which Cannon allegedly spread false information that led to unnecessary panic and strain on law enforcement resources. Officials referenced earlier incidents, including a May 4, 2024 report claiming a detainee had been stabbed multiple times, as well as a September 30, 2025 post that used outdated and misleading footage of a previous altercation. Both situations reportedly caused alarm and disrupted normal operations.

Following the April incident, legal action moved forward. On April 10, 2026, Judge Phillip Green determined there was probable cause and issued an arrest warrant. Cannon was charged with Communicating a False Alarm (A.C.A. § 5-71-210(a)) and Impairing the Operation of a Vital Public Facility (A.C.A. § 5-38-205). Bond was set at $1,000 secured.

Members of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division later located Cannon and took him into custody. He was transported to the same detention center involved in the incident, where he was booked without further issues.

Officials spoke strongly about the risks tied to false reports, especially when they involve claims of weapons inside secure facilities. “Let me be clear, false reports of this nature are not harmless. When an individual knowingly spreads misinformation that suggests the presence of a weapon inside a detention facility, it triggers a full-scale emergency response. That response requires the immediate diversion of deputies, detention personnel, and critical resources that are intended to protect the public. These actions place our staff, our detainees, and our community at unnecessary risk. These actions also create unnecessary worry and stress on the family members of detainees who are in W.C. “Dub” Brassell Adult Detention Center. We will not tolerate the intentional misuse of social media to create panic or interfere with public safety operations,” said Major Dennis Kendall. “Cannon’s ability to post the bail set with the bond, will dictate his first appearance in Jefferson County District Court.”

Sheriff Lafayette Woods, Jr. also addressed the situation, warning about the wider consequences of spreading false information. “The deliberate spread of false information, especially involving a claim as serious as a firearm inside a secure detention facility is both reckless and dangerous. Every time our deputies are forced to respond to a fabricated emergency, it diverts resources away from real calls for service where lives may truly be at risk. This type of behavior undermines public trust, disrupts lawful operations, and endangers the very community we are sworn to protect. Let this serve as a clear message: individuals who engage in this kind of conduct will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” he said.

Authorities emphasized that maintaining safety inside detention facilities remains a top priority. They also urged the public to rely on verified information and avoid spreading unconfirmed claims that could cause harm or confusion.
