Little Rock, Arkansas – A recent incident involving a police officer shooting a man has led to significant consequences within the Little Rock Police Department (LRPD). Officer Johvoni McClendon, who was at the center of the incident on September 30, has been terminated from his role, according to official LRPD announcements.
The series of events on that day unfolded in the early hours, around 2 a.m., when LRPD officers were in pursuit of a car near Mabelvale Pike. After losing track of the vehicle they were chasing, the officers noticed a truck repeatedly driving around the area. Upon approaching the truck and instructing the driver to exit, the passenger unexpectedly took the driver’s seat, attempting to escape the scene. This led Officer McClendon to shoot the man who had been driving initially.
LRPD Chief Helton provided insights into the incident, revealing that after reviewing the body-worn and in-car camera footage, it was apparent that Officer McClendon’s actions deviated from the department’s policy on the use of deadly force. Fortunately, the injured man is on the path to recovery.
However, as a result of his actions, Officer McClendon now faces legal consequences. He has been charged with felony first-degree battery and misdemeanor first-degree assault. In response to these charges, he has entered a plea of not guilty.
On October 11, following an administrative hearing within the LRPD, the decision to terminate McClendon was finalized. The department stressed that McClendon’s decision to discharge his service weapon while on duty was a direct violation of LRPD policies. The necessary procedures for his termination have been thoroughly executed, marking the end of his tenure with the department.
