Missing mother of 5 died after the man who fled to the U.S. to escape crimes committed in his home country indecently assaulted her before smashing her head with a rock; man convicted

Maryland – In a disturbing case that left Maryland residents shocked, a 24-year-old man, identified as V. Hernandez, a 24-year-old El Salvadoran immigrant, was convicted in connection with the death of a missing 37-year-old mother of five, identified as R. Morin. The conviction came after a rapid jury deliberation that lasted less than an hour, concluding a tense nine-day trial.

The chilling details of the case began to unfold when Morin, a mother of five, was reported missing by her boyfriend on August 5, 2023, after she failed to return from a walk along a popular trail. Her disappearance prompted an immediate search. Unfortunately, her body was discovered the following day in a wooded area near the trail, not far from her parked car. According to the reports from local news sources, Morin was found without some of her clothes, having suffered 10 to 15 head wounds and strangulation, a clear indication of the violent assault she endured.

The breakthrough in the case came through the meticulous gathering of forensic evidence. DNA samples collected from several parts of Morin’s body pointed conclusively to Hernandez. These samples were crucial in linking him directly to the crime, further supported by matching DNA found on clothing provided by the defendant’s family. According to reports at the time, Hernandez intercepted Morin while she was on a walk and then indecently assaulted her before “smashing” her head with a rock.

The charges brought against Hernandez were severe, reflecting the gruesome nature of the crime: first-degree premeditated murder, first-degree ra-e, third-degree se-ual offense, and kidnapping. His history of violence was detailed during the trial, including previous attacks in California and a murder in his home country, painting a portrait of a man who had repeatedly escaped accountability for his actions.

State’s Attorney A. Healey and Sheriff J. Gahler expressed their distress over the case, emphasizing the impact on the community and the defendant’s alarming background. Gahler criticized the immigration system that allowed such an individual to enter and reside in the United States, suggesting that this tragedy could have been prevented. “Hernandez did not come here to make a better life for himself or for his family,” Sheriff Gahler said during the announcement of his arrest. “He came here to escape the crime he committed in El Salvador. He came here and murdered Morin and, God willing, no one else. But that should have never been allowed to happen.” The prosecution’s argument was described as “airtight” by Healey, who was relieved yet somber about the jury’s quick decision. She highlighted the horrific nature of the crime but also the solid investigative work that led to the swift conviction.

The court’s decision to convict Hernandez on all counts was a decisive move toward justice for Morin and her grieving family. The prosecution has indicated plans to request that the sentences for each count be served consecutively to ensure Hernandez never has the opportunity to harm another individual. In contrast, the defense expressed disappointment in the verdict but recognized the need to focus on the upcoming sentencing phase. They vowed to ensure a fair process for Hernandez, considering all relevant factors.

The case’s resolution does not alleviate the pain experienced by Morin’s family and friends, nor does it restore a sense of safety to the community shattered by such a brutal act. Hernandez is scheduled to be sentenced within the next 60 to 90 days. Until then, he remains in custody as Morin’s family wait to see what justice will ultimately look like in the aftermath of such a tragic and senseless loss. Morin is remembered as a loving mother to five children whose life was cut short in an act of violence that has left a lasting scar on all who knew her.
