Iowa – In a disturbing case out of Iowa, a 21-year-old man, identified as N. Norrell, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after authorities say he stabbed his own mother in the neck during an argument inside their home. According to investigators, the violent attack began after the mother refused to lend her son a speaker. Norrell was arrested on Feb. 28 and now faces charges of attempted murder and going armed with intent. Police say the charges stem from an incident in which he attacked his mother with a large knife while heavily intoxicated. Authorities say the victim survived the attack and informed police that her son was trying to kill her.
The incident unfolded at the family residence, where officers with the police department were called after the mother dialed 911 following the assault. According to court documents, Norrell had been drinking heavily that evening. At some point during the night, he asked his mother if she could lend him her speaker. When she refused, investigators say the situation escalated in a terrifying way.
Police allege that Norrell went into the bathroom and waited there while holding a large knife. When his mother later entered the bathroom, he allegedly attacked her, stabbing her in the neck. The victim also suffered defensive wounds to her hands as she tried to protect herself during the assault. Despite the severe nature of the attack, the woman managed to escape the immediate danger and move toward the kitchen in an attempt to treat her injuries.
Court documents indicate that Norrell followed her into the kitchen before she managed to call 911. During interviews with police, the victim reportedly said she “feared for her life” as her son intended to kill her. She also told investigators that the neck wound appeared deliberate. The attack did not come entirely without warning, she explained. According to the documents, two weeks earlier, Norrell had been found passed out in a bedroom with a knife next to him, raising concerns about his behavior.
Once the 911 call was made, Norrell reportedly fled the house. Police say he left the residence and used an Uber ride to travel to his grandfather’s home. Not long afterward, Norrell turned himself in at the local police department. Officers took him into custody and later transported him to the county jail, where he remains behind bars. When questioned by investigators, Norrell claimed that he had blacked out due to alcohol consumption combined with medications and said he could not remember what happened during the attack. Meanwhile, emergency responders treated the victim for injuries described as non-life-threatening. Despite the trauma of the attack, she survived the stabbing.
Norrell has been formally charged with attempted murder and going armed with intent. The seriousness of the allegations led a judge to impose a $750,000 cash bond. A no-contact order has also been issued, preventing him from contacting his mother while the case proceeds. Online court records show Norrell has a history of previous legal issues, including several traffic-related infractions that have since been resolved. In December 2025, he was also charged with attempted burglary, along with misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct and interfering with official acts. Those cases remain pending. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 10, when the legal process will continue.
What began as a simple disagreement over a household item turned into a violent confrontation that left a mother fearing for her life. Police say the case highlights the unpredictable dangers that can arise when alcohol, weapons, and escalating family disputes collide. As the court process moves forward, the outcome will ultimately determine what consequences Norrell may face for the alleged attack that nearly turned deadly inside his own home.
