Mother, who would tie her 4-year-old son’s wrists and ankles together and then lock him in a storage room just because the boy ate and drank without permission, was arrested

North Carolina – In a troubling case in North Carolina, a mother faces serious charges for confining her 4-year-old son in a cruel manner as a form of punishment. The 30-year-old mother, identified as T. Rivera, was charged with child abuse after it was discovered that she had tied up her son and locked him in a storage room within their temporary residence at the hotel.

The case came to light on August 7 when the young boy was treated at the hospital. Medical staff noticed injuries on his neck, wrists, and ankles, prompting them to alert the authorities. Social workers involved in the case reported that Rivera justified her actions by claiming the child would consume all of her food, drink excessively, and have issues with incontinence, which she deemed punishable by such severe measures.

During their investigation, detectives learned from Rivera during interviews that she would bind her son’s wrists and ankles and confine him in the closet. This admission was supported by observations from a witness who noticed the boy’s injuries on July 30. According to the affidavit, when questioned about the marks, Rivera reportedly stated, “I do whatever I want to my child,” indicating a dismissive attitude towards the severity of her actions.

Law enforcement acted swiftly following the hospital’s report. The sheriff’s office collaborated with other law enforcement agencies to further investigate the matter. The investigation pointed back to their hotel residence, where the abuse took place. Rivera was eventually arrested and charged with child abuse causing serious injuries. Despite the gravity of the allegations, she was released on a $5,000 bond on September 10 and is scheduled for her court appearance on October 1.

The incident has sparked outrage and concern among the local community, particularly among residents of the hotel where Rivera and her son were staying. C. Moore, a long-term resident of the hotel and a mother herself, expressed disbelief and anger over the accusations. She emphasized the close-knit nature of the hotel community, stating, “She’s lucky I didn’t find out before the cops got her, because I’m telling you right now, here, we’re family and we watch out for everybody’s little youngins.”

Moore’s sentiment underscores a communal responsibility to protect the vulnerable and report suspicious activities to prevent such tragedies. The case has also highlighted the need for vigilance and intervention when signs of child abuse or neglect are observed. As the legal proceedings unfold, the focus remains on the welfare of the young victim, who is now recovering after his hospitalization. The broader implications of the case resonate deeply within the community and among advocates for child safety, calling for increased awareness and stricter measures to prevent child abuse. The tragic circumstances of this case serve as a sobering reminder of the vulnerabilities of children and the critical role of community and legal systems in safeguarding them from harm.
