Over $19 million awarded for non-motorized transportation projects in Arkansas

Overnight closures scheduled on Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard in Fayetteville for Interstate 49 bridge construction work

Little Rock, Arkansas – The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) has officially announced the recipients of the 2024 Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) and Recreational Trails Program (RTP) grants. These programs, energized by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), aim to enhance non-motorized transportation across the state, with a focus on improving infrastructure for pedestrians and bicyclists.

TAP, a key component of the recent infrastructure advancements, is designed to fund a wide range of projects that qualify as “transportation alternatives.” The program supports the construction of both on-road and off-road facilities, which include sidewalks, bicycle lanes, pedestrian and bicycle signals, as well as lighting and other safety-related infrastructure aimed at non-motorized users. Additionally, it facilitates the transformation of unused railroad corridors into pedestrian and bicycle-friendly trails, enhancing connectivity and accessibility.

The funding structure of the TAP operates on a reimbursement basis, requiring a financial match from recipients—80% from federal sources and 20% from local entities. This strategic financial setup encourages local investment into broader state and national goals for sustainable and safe transportation options.

Parallel to TAP, the RTP focuses on the recreational side of trail use. It allocates funds specifically for the maintenance and restoration of existing trails, the development and rehabilitation of trailside and trailhead facilities, and the creation of new trail linkages. This program not only boosts recreational activity but also supports ecological tourism and local economies through enhanced outdoor amenities.

For the year 2024, ARDOT has awarded approximately $16.7 million to 54 TAP projects and an additional $2.5 million to 11 RTP projects. The list of award recipients and project names can be found here.

These initiatives by ARDOT are poised to significantly impact the state’s landscape for cyclists, hikers, and everyday commuters, illustrating a progressive step towards more inclusive and environmentally conscious transportation solutions.
