Little Rock, Arkansas – Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, in collaboration with the Arkansas Economic Development Commission’s Division of Rural Services, announced the distribution of $344,728.69 in grants to 33 cities and counties across Arkansas last week. These grants are part of an ongoing effort to enhance the infrastructure and quality of life in rural communities throughout the state.
“These grants go a long way toward making sure that every corner of Arkansas – not just a few big cities – is taken care of,” said Governor Sanders. “These 33 recipients come from across our state, from Yellville to Mulberry. Each one of these grants provides their communities with the tools they need to make Arkansas the best place to live, work, and raise a family.”
The grants were awarded under the Rural Community Grant Program, a key initiative of the Division of Rural Services. This program supports various community projects, such as purchasing fire trucks, acquiring fire protection equipment, building community centers, installing storm sirens, and developing community parks, walking trails, and baseball fields. The program targets incorporated towns with populations of less than 3,000 and unincorporated rural areas, offering up to $15,000 in matching funds for eligible projects.
Enhancing Infrastructure and Quality of Life
Clint O’Neal, Executive Director of the Arkansas Economic Development Commission, emphasized the importance of rural communities in driving the state’s economic success. “Rural communities play a major role in the economic success of our state,” O’Neal said. “The grants awarded by AEDC’s Division of Rural Services will help rural communities throughout the state improve their infrastructure and quality of life amenities to benefit Arkansans.”
The grants distributed in this cycle are part of the second round of Fiscal Year 2024 funding. Earlier in the year, AEDC awarded $806,125 in grants to 29 Arkansas cities and counties during the 2024 Rural Development Conference in May.
Becca Caldwell, Director of the Division of Rural Services, reiterated the state’s commitment to supporting rural areas. “We are committed to working with and supporting rural communities in Arkansas to help them succeed,” Caldwell said. “With the latest Rural Community Grant Program awards, thirty-three Arkansas cities and counties have additional resources and funding for important projects that will increase quality of life in their communities.”
Recipients Across the State
The grants were distributed to a diverse group of communities, each receiving funds tailored to their specific needs. Some notable recipients include:
- The Center Hill Fire Department received $15,000 to enhance fire protection services.
- The City of Foreman was awarded $15,000 for community development projects.
- The City of Mulberry received $3,847.84 for local improvements.
- The Cotter-Gassville Rural Fire Protection District was granted $14,433.08 for fire protection upgrades.
- Stone County received $15,000 for essential community services.
These grants are expected to have a significant impact on the recipient communities, helping to strengthen infrastructure, improve safety, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents. As Arkansas continues to invest in its rural areas, the state’s commitment to balanced development and support for all its citizens remains clear.
Continued Commitment to Rural Arkansas
Governor Sanders and the Arkansas Economic Development Commission’s ongoing support for rural communities demonstrate a strong commitment to ensuring that all areas of the state, regardless of size, have the resources needed to thrive. The Rural Community Grant Program will continue to play a crucial role in empowering these communities, fostering growth, and improving the lives of Arkansans across the state.
