Pine Bluff dedicates new center to fallen Detective Kevin D. Collins

City of Pine Bluff receives major funding boost for Sixth and Main Street project

Pine Bluff, Arkansas – In a move that deeply resonates with Pine Bluff’s community, the Detective Kevin D. Collins Center was officially introduced this past Thursday. Not merely a new establishment, the center stands as a symbol of dedication, service, and a heartwarming tribute to Detective Collins, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty three years prior.

Detective Collins is remembered and revered not just for his commitment to the Pine Bluff Police Department, where he served for five years in the violent crimes unit, but also for his lifelong aspiration. According to Mayor Shirley Washington, becoming a police officer was a dream Collins had cherished since he was just three years old. His leadership, both for the younger and senior officers, was palpable. “He was a leader when it came down to it,” Mayor Washington remarked.

The tragic incident on October 5th, 2020, at the Econo Lodge on North Blake Street shook the community. A shooting there claimed Collins’ life and left another officer injured. Yet, out of this profound loss, the city aims to ensure that Collins’ legacy endures.

The newly opened center, which will serve as both a Police Training Center and City Council Chamber, symbolizes a commitment to excellence and service. Mayor Washington shared the multitude of features the center offers, from a 12-seat computer lab and designated offices for detectives and administrative teams, to a transformed old theater that can now seat over 150 individuals. Notably, the prior council chamber only had the capacity to accommodate 70 people.

With the new center, the city hopes to honor Detective Collins and his devotion to Pine Bluff. “He was the son of the city of Pine Bluff,” Mayor Washington expressed, emphasizing how naming the center after Collins ensures his legacy’s continuation for generations to come.

Moreover, this dedication isn’t just symbolic. The state-of-the-art facilities and the sentiment behind them are intended to inspire pride among the officers. As Mayor Washington observed, the very demeanor of officers as they traverse the center is testament to the pride they feel. By providing such a resource-rich environment, the city hopes not just to honor the past but also to pave the way for a future where officers feel valued, ultimately aiding in attracting and retaining dedicated personnel.
