Sanders calls for special convention in Columbia County to address Justice of the Peace nominee vacancy

Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders authorizes additional disaster recovery funding following severe storms tornadoes and flooding that struck the state in March 2024

Magnolia, Arkansas – Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has issued a proclamation calling for a special convention in Columbia County to fill the vacancy for the Democratic nominee for Justice of the Peace, District 8. This action follows the recent passing of the Democratic nominee, the Honorable Terry Williams, on August 12, 2024.

Vacancy in Democratic Nominee

The vacancy arose after the Columbia County Election Commission certified Terry Williams as the Democratic nominee for Justice of the Peace, District 8, in the March 5, 2024, primary election. Williams’ untimely death has left the position without a nominee, prompting the Democratic Party of Arkansas to take swift action to address the situation. Upon being notified of the vacancy, Governor Sanders responded by calling for a special convention to select a new nominee.

Convention Deadline and Requirements

According to the proclamation, a special convention of delegates from the Columbia County Democratic Committee is mandated to be held no later than September 19, 2024. The purpose of this convention is to fill the vacancy and select a new nominee for the office. Once the Democratic Party’s nominee is chosen, the Chair and Secretary of the convention must provide a certificate of nomination to both the Columbia County Clerk and the Columbia County Election Commission by the same September 19 deadline.

Governor Sanders’ proclamation emphasizes that all procedures, deadlines, and requirements of the convention must adhere strictly to the applicable election laws of the State of Arkansas.

Moving Forward to Fill the Vacancy

The special convention called by Governor Sanders ensures that the Democratic Party has the opportunity to fill the vacancy promptly and maintain its candidate representation for the upcoming election for Justice of the Peace, District 8. This swift action underscores the importance of fulfilling electoral processes even in unforeseen circumstances, allowing for a smooth transition and ensuring that the community continues to have proper representation.

Governor Sanders’ proclamation, signed and dated on August 30, 2024, solidifies the state’s commitment to addressing electoral vacancies promptly and maintaining the integrity of the election process in Columbia County. The upcoming convention will be a crucial step in selecting a new nominee who can carry on the responsibilities and serve the citizens of District 8.
