Son left his mother unrecognizable, claiming “voices from a higher power” made him beat her so badly that he broke her ribs and facial bones, killing her; sentenced

Pennsylvania – In a harrowing episode of family violence in Pennsylvania, a 42-year-old man, identified as E. Watkins, has been sentenced to a substantial prison term for the brutal murder of his 60-year-old mother, identified as Patricia. The sentencing concluded years of legal proceedings, revealing the depths of a domestic tragedy that ended in a mother’s violent death.

The grim saga began on the night of December 13, 2020, when authorities were called to the Watkins’ residence due to a reported domestic dispute. They arrived to find a chilling scene: a woman dead, her body battered and left in a bathtub. The severity of her injuries was such that she was unrecognizable. The victim was beaten so badly that she had broken ribs, and parts of her face and skull were crushed. Watkins didn’t hesitate to confess as troopers arrived, proclaiming his culpability in his mother’s death. According to reports, Watkins had an immediate and clear admission, telling officers, “She is dead, my mom is dead, I killed her.”

The altercation escalated from a fierce argument involving Watkins and his stepbrother. According to court documents, the dispute turned violent when Watkins began assaulting his mother on a couch. In an attempt to escape Watkins’ fury, his stepbrother and the victim locked themselves in a bathroom. The stepbrother then fled through a window to seek help but found Patricia Watkins dead upon his return. During police interrogation, Erik Watkins claimed to have moved back in with his mother only recently before the murder. He recounted that on the day of the killing, after visiting a methadone clinic and consuming marijuana, he experienced severe hallucinations and heard “voices from a higher power” urging violence, which his defense attorney attributed to a distorted mental state exacerbated by drug use.

After his arrest, Watkins’ journey through the legal system was marked by several twists, including attempts to suppress his confession and disputes regarding his legal representation. He initially pleaded not guilty, despite his immediate confession at the scene, leading to prolonged legal battles that only concluded with his recent guilty plea to third-degree murder. On Tuesday, Judge R. Streett handed down a sentence of 15 to 40 years in prison. The defendant’s tearful apology during the sentencing highlighted his remorse and the devastating impact of substance abuse on his actions and mental health. “I’m extremely remorseful. No words can define how terrible I feel. I loved my mother. I love my family and I’m sorry. I’m so sorry,” Watkins expressed in court, acknowledging the irreversible damage his actions had caused.

The tragedy has left the Watkins family grappling with the consequences of domestic violence and substance abuse. The victim’s other son, in an emotional statement during the sentencing, lamented the cruel manner of his mother’s death and reflected on her life’s aspirations for her family. “Mom didn’t deserve to die like that,” he stated, mourning the loss of a woman described as loving and dedicated to her sons’ well-being. Watkins’ sentencing closes a painful chapter for all involved, serving as a stark reminder of the devastating effects of violence and substance abuse within families. He was remanded to the state Department of Corrections to serve his sentence, receiving credit for 1,361 days served behind bars.
