Southbound lane on Interstate 555 near Payneway will close on weekdays in December for crucial bridge repairs

Southbound lane on Interstate 555 near Payneway will close on weekdays in December for crucial bridge repairs

Payneway, Arkansas – Drivers in northeast Arkansas should prepare for traffic disruptions as the southbound outside lane of Interstate 555 over Ditch Number 60 of the St. Francis Sunken Lands near Payneway is scheduled to close from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, Monday through Thursday, beginning December 1 through December 18.

According to the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT), the closures are necessary to allow crews to perform repairs on the substructure of the bridge. These repairs are part of ongoing maintenance aimed at ensuring the long‑term safety and stability of the bridge infrastructure.

Traffic Alerts and Safety Measures in Place

“Weather permitting, the lane closures will allow crews to repair the substructure on the bridge,” officials stated, emphasizing that the schedule could change depending on weather conditions. During the construction period, motorists should expect delays and plan alternate routes when possible.

To help guide drivers through the area safely, ARDOT will have digital message boards, construction barrels, barricades, and clear signage placed along the affected section of the highway. These tools will help notify travelers of closures and direct them to available detour routes.

Drivers are encouraged to check travel conditions before leaving by visiting IDriveArkansas.com or ARDOT.gov, where updates and real-time traffic information are provided.

Motorists passing through the area during the closure hours are urged to exercise caution, reduce speed near work zones, and follow all posted signs for the safety of workers and travelers alike.
