Van Buren to serve as Arkansas’ Capital for a Day on August 27th

Van Buren, Arkansas – Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has announced that Van Buren, a city rich in history and culture, will be Arkansas’ Capital for a Day on August 27th, 2024. This honor is part of Governor Sanders’ “Capital for a Day” program, which aims to spotlight cities across the state and bring senior state government officials into local communities.

A City Steeped in History

Van Buren holds a unique place in Arkansas history. Founded on the edge of Indian Territory, the city played a crucial role as a launching point for prospectors during the 1849 California gold rush. It was named after Martin Van Buren, who was the Secretary of State at the time and later became the President of the United States.

The city was also home to Arkansas’ first-ever federal district court and served as a battleground during the Civil War. Van Buren’s strategic location along the Arkansas River made it a frequent stop for steamboats, and these historic passageways are now part of the Arkansas Heritage Trails System.

Cultural and Historic Significance

One of Van Buren’s most iconic landmarks is the King Opera House, which has stood for over a century as a cultural center for the city. Despite suffering damage from a fire, the building remains a key attraction in the historic district downtown. The city’s preserved streets and buildings have even served as film sets for directors looking to recreate scenes from the Old West.

Capital for a Day Program

Governor Sanders’ “Capital for a Day” program is designed to highlight great cities like Van Buren and strengthen connections between state and local governments. By designating Van Buren as the state’s temporary capital on August 27th, Governor Sanders and senior state officials will engage with local leaders and residents to better understand and address the community’s needs.

Governor Sanders officially named Van Buren as the twelfth “Capital for a Day” on August 23rd, 2024, marking another chapter in the city’s long and storied history. The Governor, along with state officials, looks forward to visiting Van Buren and celebrating its rich heritage with its residents.
