Walmart introduces Caroline’s Carts to enhance accessibility for shoppers with disabilities

Little Rock, Arkansas – In a move aimed at enhancing the shopping experience for customers with special needs, Walmart has introduced “Caroline’s Carts” across various locations in Arkansas and other states. These specially designed shopping carts are part of Walmart’s broader initiative to foster inclusivity and accessibility in its stores.

Caroline’s Carts are uniquely tailored for caregivers of adults and children who have disabilities, limited mobility, or injuries, enabling them to navigate the aisles with greater ease. Each cart features a large seat that can accommodate individuals weighing between 35 and 250 pounds. “Helping our customers save money and live better is more than our mission – it’s our driving force,” stated Cedric Clark, executive vice president of store operations at Walmart, emphasizing the company’s commitment to its customers.

The initiative sees each Walmart Supercenter equipped with two of these accessible carts, while Neighborhood Markets will have one cart available. This deployment is aimed at ensuring that caregivers have the necessary tools to assist their dependents comfortably during shopping trips.

Clark further elaborated on the significance of this initiative, “Equipping our stores with Caroline’s Carts provides some relief to parents and caregivers who need this tool and know it’s available at their Walmart. Whether they’re caring for someone with a disability or a temporary injury, the carts support our customers when and how they need it every time they come through our doors.”

Moreover, Walmart has been proactive in creating a sensory-friendly shopping environment. Following positive feedback, the company reinstated its sensory-friendly hours, which were initially introduced for the back-to-school season. From 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. daily, participating stores minimize sensory stimuli by turning off in-store radios, setting TV monitors to still screens, and dimming lights to create a calmer shopping environment.

The rollout of Caroline’s Carts is currently active in multiple states, including Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas. By early 2025, Walmart aims to provide a Caroline’s Cart in every store, totaling around 8,000 carts nationwide, reinforcing its objective to offer an inclusive shopping experience for all customers.
