Weekend-long closure of Highway 28 north of Waldron scheduled for bridge repairs

Overnight closures scheduled on Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard in Fayetteville for Interstate 49 bridge construction work

Waldron, Arkansas – Motorists traveling through Scott County are advised to prepare for a full weekend closure on a stretch of Highway 28 north of Waldron, as crews make critical repairs to two aging bridges. According to the Arkansas Department of Transportation, the closure will begin at midnight on Saturday, August 16, and remain in effect through 5 a.m. on Monday, August 18.

The repair project focuses on replacing concrete channel beams on two separate bridge structures — one spanning Lookout Creek, located less than half a mile west of Hon Loop, and the other crossing Jerico Branch near the intersection of Highway 28 and Chalybeate Road.

While the road will be entirely shut down between the two bridges, local traffic will still be able to access areas on either side of the closure. To help navigate around the work zone, officials have provided signed detour routes for both directions of travel.

For westbound drivers needing to get around the closure, the designated detour takes vehicles south on Highway 71 to Acorn, then north on Highway 59, and continues to Highway 128. Eastbound travelers will need to head south on Highway 59 to Highway 71, travel north toward Waldron, and then head west on Highway 28.

To keep the public informed, the state will deploy digital message boards, barricades, construction barrels, and signage in the area. These safety measures are intended to guide motorists safely through the detour and ensure the work can be completed efficiently and without incident.

Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow for extra travel time during the closure period. The work is part of the state’s continued effort to maintain safe travel infrastructure throughout Arkansas.
