1-month-old boy found in a carrier on the street wearing nothing but a diaper during cold temperatures after his parents left him following an argument about mom’s heavy drinking and late-night parties; parents arrested

Colorado – In a heartbreaking incident that shocked Colorado residents, a 33-year-old mother, identified as C. Thurman, and a 42-year-old father, identified as J. Smith, were arrested after leaving their 1-month-old boy in a carrier on the street during cold temperatures on December 25, following an argument about Thurman’s heavy drinking and late-night parties. The parents now face serious charges of felony child abuse.

The shocking series of events began in the early morning hours on Wednesday when a passerby noticed an unattended carrier in the median of a public street. The sheriff’s office reported that the child, dressed only in a diaper and exposed to the winter cold, was quickly attended to by the concerned citizen who made the 911 call. According to authorities, the baby boy was left sitting in a carrier that notably bore a label stating, “Display only. Not intended for sale.”

Law enforcement arrived at the scene around 9:20 a.m. and immediately began a search for clues. They sought surveillance footage in the area that might reveal who had left the child or if anyone had been in the vicinity at the time of abandonment. In their efforts to resolve the case, the sheriff’s office also shared photographs of the distinctive car seat on social media, appealing to the public for any information related to the baby or the family involved. The community’s response was swift and instrumental in advancing the investigation. By late afternoon on Wednesday, the sheriff’s office had been in contact with relatives of the infant and continued to delve into the circumstances surrounding the child’s abandonment. By the evening, they confirmed the arrest of the child’s biological parents.

During a subsequent court appearance, Judge J. Russell described Thurman as “a danger to your son,” highlighting both physical and emotional threats posed by her actions. Court documents revealed a dispute between Thurman and Sims over her alcohol consumption and late-night parties, which escalated to Sims placing the baby on the median and walking away. Instead of retrieving her son, Thurman reportedly called her stepfather for a ride. Both Thurman and Sims are currently held on a $50,000 bond with further court proceedings scheduled for Monday.

The incident has prompted a strong reaction from local law enforcement and the community alike. “Thank you to our community who quickly sprang into action, spread the word, and assisted with sharing the information about this incident,” stated the sheriff’s office in a release. The 1-month-old boy was taken to a children’s hospital as a precaution, where he received necessary care.

This case has brought to light the critical importance of community vigilance and the swift response of local authorities in safeguarding vulnerable members of the community. As the investigation continues, authorities are poised to address the severe implications of the parents’ actions, emphasizing the seriousness with which child endangerment is regarded. As the local community and broader public await further developments, there is a collective hope for justice and a safer future for the abandoned child. The legal proceedings against Sims and Thurman will likely serve as a poignant reminder of the responsibilities and legal obligations of parenthood.
