15-year-old boy, who had “zero supervision” and was allowed to do “anything he wants,” died after his mother left him in the home with friends to do drugs; mother charged

Oklahoma – In a heartbreaking case from Oklahoma, a 44-year-old mother, identified as L. Henckel, faces severe legal consequences following the tragic death of her 15-year-old son, identified as C. Sanchez, who died from a fentanyl overdose. Henckel has been charged with child neglect as investigations reveal a pattern of negligence that culminated in her son’s untimely demise.

The life of Sanchez was marked by continual neglect and exposure to harmful environments under his mother’s care, which authorities claim contributed significantly to his tragic death. This situation came to a head on December 2, 2023, when the police department responded to an emergency call about a drug overdose at their home. Upon arrival, first responders found Sanchez unresponsive and rushed him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead three days later due to fentanyl intoxication. Sanchez’s environment was fraught with danger and neglect, as evidenced by the discovery of drug paraphernalia and alcohol in his room. His mother, who has struggled with drug addiction for the majority of Sanchez’s life, has faced numerous accusations over the years, including leaving her son unsupervised for extended periods and allowing him access to drugs and alcohol.

The problems in Sanchez’s life were well documented, with 22 referrals made to Oklahoma’s Department of Human Services citing concerns about drug use in the home, unsanitary living conditions, and a lack of supervision. Despite these numerous warnings, the necessary interventions failed to materialize in time to save Sanchez from the dangers within his own home. According to police reports, the victim’s girlfriend said Sanchez often did not have any food, has “zero supervision, is allowed to do anything he wants, and is not made to attend school.” On the fateful night of his overdose, Henckel admitted to leaving Sanchez alone to use drugs with friends, only to return and find him unresponsive. Her subsequent actions, including breaking into her own home and seeking help from neighbors, were too late to reverse the dire situation she had allowed to develop.

Following her son’s death, Henckel was arrested and charged with child neglect. She is currently held on a $100,000 bond in jail. The community and authorities have expressed deep sorrow and frustration over the preventable nature of this tragedy. Stillwater Police Lt. TJ Low commented on the case, highlighting the destructive impact of addiction and the unnecessary loss of a young life. Det. J. Carson, reflecting on the investigation, pointed out the clear signs of neglect and the unrestricted freedom Sanchez had to engage in harmful behaviors under his mother’s lack of supervision. This case has prompted discussions on the responsibilities of parents and the critical role of social services in intervening before such tragedies occur.

Despite the turmoil in his young life, Sanchez is remembered by friends and loved ones as a boy who loved basketball, music, and spending time at the lake. His obituary reflects the deep yearning he had for love and acceptance, especially from his parents. As the community mourns the loss of a young life, there is a collective call for accountability and change to prevent such tragedies in the future. Henckel’s next court appearance is scheduled for next month, where the consequences of her actions will be further addressed. This case serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of parental responsibility and the devastating consequences of neglect.
