Arkansas – The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) has deployed a specialized team to assist the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LADOTD) in managing an anticipated severe winter weather event. This deployment aims to provide critical support in keeping major roadways clear and ensuring safer travel conditions in Louisiana.
ARDOT Crews Mobilize for Emergency Response
A team of approximately 60 ARDOT employees, including snowplow operators and salt brine tanker drivers, has been dispatched from central Arkansas and three southern districts. Their primary focus will be on pre-treating and plowing key highways and interstates, including Interstate 10, Interstate 49, U.S. Highway 190, and Interstate 12.
ARDOT Director Jared Wiley expressed his support for the initiative, stating, “ARDOT is pleased to assist the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development with the winter storm anticipated to impact a large portion of Louisiana.”
This assistance is made possible through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC), a federal agreement established in 1996 that allows states to provide mutual aid during emergencies. Through this agreement, ARDOT will be reimbursed for all operational costs, including salaries, equipment use, travel, lodging, and supplies.
Coordinated Efforts Across State Lines
Wiley praised the collaboration between the two states and highlighted the role of the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management (ADEM) in facilitating the mission. “I have spoken with LADOTD Secretary Joe Donahue. He and his team are eager to welcome ARDOT crews into the Pelican State,” Wiley said. “We also appreciate A.J. Gary and his team at the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management. They have been working closely with their counterparts in Louisiana to get this EMAC established.”
The deployment underscores ARDOT’s commitment to regional cooperation and disaster response readiness. The Arkansas team will work diligently to ensure traffic continues to flow on Louisiana’s busiest roadways despite the expected challenging conditions.
