The Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas hosts stirring performance of The Color Purple in partnership with UAPB

Pine Bluff, Arkansas – Audiences in Pine Bluff will soon be able to experience the powerful musical adaptation of The Color Purple, brought to life in a special partnership between the ARTx3 Campus and the John McLinn Ross Players at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, this celebrated production tells the story of Celie, a young Black woman navigating life in rural Georgia during the early 20th century.

Through abuse, hardship, and struggle, Celie’s journey unfolds into one of strength, love, and self-discovery. As she finds her voice and her purpose, the musical uplifts with a soul-stirring score that fuses jazz, gospel, blues, and ragtime. The Color Purple is more than a performance—it is a story of transformation and healing that speaks to the resilience of the human spirit.

Directed by Taijee and co-directed by Michelle Young-Hobbs, the production also features musical direction by Laleata May and choreography by Daija Black. Their creative collaboration brings emotional depth and vibrancy to a story that has touched readers and viewers for generations.

The performances will take place at the Catherine M. Bellamy Theater at The Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas, located at 701 S. Main St. in Pine Bluff. Showtimes are 7 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday (April 9–12), with an additional 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, and a 3 p.m. performance on Sunday, April 13. Tickets are $15, plus applicable fees, and can be purchased online at artx3.org, by calling 870-536-3375, or in person at the venue.

Please note that the show contains adult themes and language and is recommended for ages 13 and up. Viewer discretion is advised.
