Arkansas governor awards Medal of Freedom posthumously to fallen Navy SEAL Adam Brown

Little Rock, Arkansas – Arkansas leaders gathered to honor the legacy of a fallen Navy SEAL whose bravery and sacrifice continue to inspire people across the state. Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders posthumously awarded the Arkansas Medal of Freedom to Chief Petty Officer Adam Brown, a Navy SEAL from Hot Springs who was killed in action while serving his country.

The medal was presented during a ceremony recognizing Brown’s life, military service, and the lasting impact he has had on Arkansas and the nation. Brown was killed during a combat mission in Afghanistan in 2010 while serving with SEAL Team Six, one of the most elite special operations units in the world.

Governor Sanders created the Arkansas Medal of Freedom during her State of the State Address last year. The award is intended to recognize Arkansans who have demonstrated extraordinary courage, sacrifice, and dedication in service to others. The first recipient of the medal was Dallas County Sheriff Mike Knoedl.

During the ceremony honoring Brown, the governor presented the medal to members of his family. State officials, community leaders, and others gathered to reflect on Brown’s service and the legacy he left behind.

A Life of Service and Sacrifice

Adam Brown grew up in Hot Springs and graduated from Lake Hamilton High School. After finishing school, he joined the United States Navy in 1998.

Brown later completed the Navy’s highly demanding Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training, one of the most challenging military training programs in the world. After earning his place among the Navy SEALs, he went on to serve with SEAL Team Six, a specialized unit tasked with some of the most dangerous missions carried out by U.S. forces.

His final mission took place on March 17, 2010, in Afghanistan’s Kunar Province. Brown and his teammates were conducting an operation targeting a senior Taliban commander.

During the mission, Brown volunteered to move forward toward the enemy compound despite intense enemy fire. His actions were meant to protect his teammates and help ensure the mission could be completed successfully.

Brown was killed during the operation. However, officials say the mission was ultimately successful, in large part because of the courage and determination he demonstrated during the attack.

Those who gathered for the ceremony said Brown’s story reflects the extraordinary bravery shown by members of the military who place themselves in danger to protect others.

State leaders emphasized that honoring Brown with the Arkansas Medal of Freedom ensures his sacrifice will not be forgotten. His life and service continue to stand as a powerful example of courage, loyalty, and dedication to both country and community.

Officials say the recognition also serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by service members and their families, whose strength and commitment remain an enduring part of Arkansas’ history.
