Little Rock, Arkansas – Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, along with the Arkansas Department of Human Services (DHS) and the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration (DFA), announced the release of over $5.2 million in funding aimed at ensuring the long-term sustainability of rural hospitals in the state. This initiative, known as the Rural Hospital Sustainability Program, seeks to strengthen rural communities, serve patients effectively, promote economic development, and preserve crucial access to healthcare.
Funding Allocations and Beneficiary Hospitals
The funding will be distributed over the next few weeks to four hospitals that have successfully met their operational metrics. The six-month funding allocations are as follows:
- South Mississippi County Regional Medical Center: $1.72 million
- Chicot Memorial: $1.37 million
- Mena Regional Health System: $1.37 million
- DeWitt Hospital and Nursing Home: $774,000
Governor Sanders expressed her support for these hospitals, stating, “These hospitals are leading the way in making smart, lasting changes to benefit rural Arkansans. I’m proud to support their long-term sustainability to help them effectively and efficiently serve all Arkansans.”
Key Statements from State Officials
Kristi Putnam, Secretary of the Arkansas Department of Human Services, highlighted the critical role of hospitals, particularly rural ones, in the state. She said, “All hospitals, including rural hospitals, play a pivotal role in caring for Arkansans across our state, and these funds are intended to help steady the financial situations of these critical facilities. This maximizes the use of the ARPA funding as it supports rural hospitals beyond one-time money.”
Jim Hudson, Secretary of the DFA, emphasized the broader impact of strong local hospitals, stating, “Rural hospitals across Arkansas are in a better position to serve patients as a result of their work in this program. In addition to improved patient care, a financially strong local hospital is a key component of an area’s economic success. A partnership between the Governor’s Office, General Assembly, and rural hospital leaders made this program possible, maximizing the impact of grant funding.”
Criteria and Requirements for Participating Hospitals
The program requires participating hospitals to:
- Select one of two hospital sustainability plan tracks.
- Develop a remediation plan with clearly defined benchmarks.
- Ensure that funds are not used for legal fees, debt services, tax obligations, pension funding, or court settlement payments.
The funding allocations were determined by a formula that takes into account the unique fiscal realities and needs of each participating hospital. This method ensures that the distribution of funds is both equitable and impactful.
The Rural Hospital Sustainability Program is a significant step towards securing the future of healthcare in Arkansas’s rural areas. By providing these critical funds, the state aims to enhance the operational capabilities of rural hospitals, ensuring they can continue to provide essential services to their communities. As Governor Sanders and state officials work together, the initiative promises to deliver substantial benefits not only in healthcare but also in the economic stability of rural regions.
