MPD off-duty officer arrested for DUI on Thanksgiving Eve in Arkansas

Memphis Police Department (MPD) confirmed that one of their off-duty officers was arrested in Arkansas on Thanksgiving Eve for driving under the influence (DUI).

The arrest occurred on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, around 8 p.m., when Arkansas police took Garry Arnold into custody. Arnold, a member of the MPD since 2017, was booked into the Crittenden County jail at about 11 p.m. and was later released around 1:15 a.m. Following his arrest, Memphis Police sent investigators to Arkansas and subsequently relieved Arnold of his duties, albeit with pay, pending an internal investigation.

This swift action underlines the seriousness with which the MPD is treating this incident, especially considering the potential policy violations involved. The MPD was clear in their statement that Arnold’s actions as an off-duty officer do not represent the values and hard work of the department’s officers. They emphasized their commitment to making positive contributions to the community, distancing the department from the actions of the individual officer.

The incident underscores the importance of responsible behavior by law enforcement officers, both on and off duty. The Memphis Police Department’s response demonstrates their dedication to upholding standards and addressing violations swiftly and appropriately. As the internal investigation unfolds, further details about the incident and its repercussions for Officer Arnold are expected to be revealed.
