Northbound and southbound lanes on I 55 bridge scheduled for closure through early October

Dedication ceremony planned to honor the service and sacrifice of fallen ARDOT and highway police members

West Memphis, Arkansas – Drivers traveling across the Interstate 55 (I-55) bridge over the Mississippi River should prepare for daily lane closures beginning Monday, September 8, and continuing through Thursday, October 2. According to officials, both northbound and southbound outside lanes will be affected during this period as crews carry out a routine bridge inspection.

The northbound outside lane will be closed each day from 7 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the southbound outside lane will close from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. The closures will begin on the southbound side of the bridge before moving to the northbound side.

Traffic Safety Measures and Detours

To guide motorists, digital message boards, construction barrels, barricades, and proper signage will be in place throughout the inspection period. Drivers are urged to plan ahead and allow extra time for travel as the lane restrictions may cause delays, particularly during peak commuting hours.

Officials stress that the schedule is weather permitting and subject to change if conditions affect inspection work. For real-time updates and detour routes, motorists can check IDriveArkansas.com or ARDOT.gov.

These inspections are part of ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and structural reliability of one of the region’s most vital river crossings. By conducting regular inspections and maintenance, officials aim to prevent larger disruptions in the future and maintain safe travel across the Mississippi River.
