Pine Bluff, Arkansas – Drivers in Pine Bluff are being warned to stay focused behind the wheel as local law enforcement prepares to step up patrols in an effort to reduce crashes and save lives.
The Pine Bluff Police Department announced its participation in the upcoming National Distracted Driving Mobilization, which will run from April 6 through April 13, 2026. As part of this effort, the department’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program team will conduct a High Visibility Enforcement campaign across the city.
Under the “Put the Phone Away or Pay” campaign, officers will be highly visible on the roads and actively watching for distracted driving. However, officials made it clear that enforcement will not be limited to just one type of violation. All traffic laws will be enforced during this period, with the goal of improving overall road safety.
Increased enforcement aims to prevent deadly outcomes
Authorities say the campaign comes in response to ongoing concerns about distracted driving and its severe consequences. Recent data shows that 3,208 people were killed in 2024 due to crashes involving distraction, while 315,167 others were injured. About 5 percent of all fatal crashes involved some form of distraction, highlighting how common and dangerous the behavior has become.
Younger drivers are especially at risk. Officials noted that drivers between the ages of 15 and 20 had the highest rate of distraction in fatal crashes. In addition, 639 pedestrians and others lost their lives in incidents connected to distracted driving.
Law enforcement officials are urging drivers to take the message seriously and make simple changes that can prevent tragedy. The department emphasized three key reminders for motorists: put the phone down, stay focused, and arrive alive.
During the enforcement period, drivers should expect to see more patrol vehicles and an increased number of traffic stops throughout Pine Bluff. Officers will use their discretion when handling violations, but both warnings and citations are possible.
Officials say the campaign is not just about enforcement but about awareness and responsibility. By working together and making safer choices behind the wheel, drivers can help protect themselves and others on the road.
