Arkansas – Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has ordered all flags in Arkansas to be flown at half-staff in honor of former Governor Jim Guy Tucker, who passed away on February 13, 2025. This tribute will remain in effect from sunrise on February 19 until sunset on February 24, the day of his interment.
Remembering a Lifetime of Public Service
Jim Guy Tucker Jr. was born on June 13, 1943, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He dedicated much of his life to serving the people of Arkansas in various public roles, including as governor, lieutenant governor, U.S. congressman, state attorney general, and prosecuting attorney. His career in politics and law left a lasting impact on the state.
Before holding public office, Tucker graduated from Harvard University. He later enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, but due to health reasons, he was discharged despite his efforts to remain in service. His commitment to duty did not waver, as he returned to Vietnam as a civilian war correspondent. His experiences during the war were documented in his book, Arkansas Men at War, which highlighted the bravery of Arkansas soldiers.
Tucker earned his law degree from the University of Arkansas, and soon after, he launched his political career. His first public office position was as prosecuting attorney for the Sixth Judicial District. From there, he continued his rise in state politics, being elected Arkansas Attorney General and later serving as a U.S. congressman representing the Second Congressional District.
Leadership and Legacy
After more than a decade away from public office, Tucker returned to politics in 1990, successfully running for lieutenant governor. His political journey took a historic turn when Governor Bill Clinton was elected President of the United States in 1992. This led to Tucker ascending to the governorship. In 1994, he was re-elected as governor, leading an administration focused on public safety and responsible state spending.
Following his resignation from office in 1996, Tucker returned to private business. He spent his later years in Little Rock, enjoying time with his family as a devoted father and grandfather.
Governor Sanders recognized Tucker as part of a generation of Arkansas leaders who left a deep mark on the state’s history. His contributions continue to influence Arkansas, and his legacy will be remembered by those he served.
A State in Mourning
In tribute to Jim Guy Tucker’s memory and service, Governor Sanders has ordered that both the United States flag and the Arkansas state flag be lowered to half-staff. This act serves as a symbol of public mourning and respect for a man whose career shaped Arkansas politics and governance.
The flags will remain lowered until February 24, 2025, the day Tucker is laid to rest.
