Little Rock, Arkansas – Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has submitted a Major Disaster Declaration to President Donald J. Trump, requesting direct federal assistance for the state of Arkansas. This action comes in response to the severe storms, tornadoes, and persistent flooding that began on April 2, 2025, and continue to impact the region.
The governor’s request outlines the urgent need for support due to both current and forecasted extreme weather events. Arkansas is facing serious and widespread flooding across several major waterways, including the Buffalo River, Spring River, Little Red River, Cache River, Black River, Saline River, Ouachita River, Eleven Point River, Mississippi River, Petit Jean River, Little River, and White River. Additional rainfall is expected to worsen conditions, prolonging flooding and placing further pressure on already strained levee systems.
“This week is bringing generational rainfall to Arkansas and, though our emergency personnel are working overtime to keep everyone safe, additional federal assistance is necessary for our disaster response efforts,” said Governor Sanders. “I appreciate President Trump and his administration’s assistance as we work to save lives and property.”
Governor Sanders is specifically requesting assistance under Categories A and B, with a focus on direct federal assistance statewide. These categories support emergency protective measures and debris removal, critical in disaster-struck areas.
The governor’s formal letter to the White House underscores the increasing challenges emergency responders face and emphasizes the urgent need for federal resources to manage the escalating crisis.
As Arkansas braces for continued rain and rising floodwaters, the request highlights the seriousness of the situation and the proactive steps being taken to safeguard both lives and infrastructure. Federal assistance, if approved, will strengthen the state’s ability to respond effectively and begin recovery in the aftermath of these historic weather events.
